Since it was “obvious” he was headed for NBA stardom ...

why did he end up playing at Murray State and not UNC or Duke or well, somewhere besides Murray State?
If we’re going to ding Brownell for missing him, we need to list a lot of other programs that didn’t know he was going to be great.

Recruiting Morant was not ranked by recruiting services ESPN, 247Sports, or Rivals.[11][12][13] His only high major NCAA Division I offer came from South Carolina.[14] He was accidentally discovered by mid-major program Murray State of the OVC in July 2016, when assistant coach James Kane attended a camp hoping to see a player who was joining his team. While looking for a snack, Kane noticed Morant playing a three-on-three game in an auxiliary gym; impressed, he contacted head coach Matt McMahon, who soon offered Morant a scholarship.[15] On September 3, 2016, Morant committed to playing for Murray State during dinner at McMahon's house.[1][16][17] His father said, "Every parent wants their child to play at a big-time program, but what I realized is, don't go where you want to be, go to where they want you."[1] His other Division I offers included Duquesne, Maryland Eastern Shore, South Carolina State, and Wofford.[17]

Morant All-time Sumter scorer Twice 3A All State Rep 27 PPG

Missed opportunity for a great kid from in-state. Should not happen and no excuses for Brad there-his coaching team missed him. Two time 3A division all-state player!!!
Morant left Crestwood High in Sumter as its all-time leading scorer, with 1,679 points and set a career-high with 47 points against Sumter High School. In his final two seasons for Crestwood, he averaged 27 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists per game, earning South Carolina Class 3A All-State honors in both years. Morant also left high school as a three-time All-Region Most Valuable Player (MVP)
Had Trapp and Simms in recruiting class. Had Oliver in recruiting class because his mom was women's basketball coach for Clemson. Roster was filled with transfer protocols for short-term wins with Reed/Mitchell/Scara. Recruiting has been biggest weakness for Brownell and that has been established over multiple years.
Murray State thankfully grabbed him so this SC native could show the world what he could do. Way to go Morant!

Ja was an in-state AAU stud. There is no excuse for not recognizing him

Exactly, he played in the same leagues as Zion, no excuses why Brownell and USUC Martin didn’t notice and attempt to go after him.

So this proves more than one thing with CBB ..

recruiting issues. Brownell obviously missed a great player who was both a 3A stud and a great UA player. This miss proves that CBB's relationship with SC High School coaches must not be great otherwise I would expect the HS coach being in Brad's ear telling him to look at Ja. How do you think Dabo picks up these diamonds from HS that are underrated? Look at Refrow, Gallman, etc. The HS coaches who have good relationships with the FB staff tell them to checkout certain guys. It appears this didn't happen with Brownell.
What about Basketball summer camps? Why doesn't Brad take a page from Dabo so we don't miss that local talent? Or if we do have camps, I haven't heard about them but we don't hear about those relationships being built within the Bball team.
I haven't bashed CBB but I have said I feel like it's time for a change. Hearing things about missing great in-state players and the players issues like last wk combined with not keeping players and playing a boring brand of Bball, it just reinforces my thoughts that its time for change.
If we found a coach that had similar results but played an exciting brand of bball, the recruiting would be easier and fan participation would double, therefore a win-win for school and fans. If we could find a coach that played exciting ball and could increase wins by 10-15%+, that would be huge!

This is a great example of why we should all be disgusted that our assistant coach budget
May 8, 2021, 3:23 PM

is below the national average. This isn’t to discredit our assistant coaches, because they do a very good job and work hard. But it’s ridiculous for anyone here to complain about assistants paid below the national average not recognizing a diamond in the rough that no other major programs did either.
Do you know the main reason why Dabo and his staff find some under the radar guys? Because Dabo’s budget for assistant coaches and staff (the guys who evaluate film and recruit) is the highest in the country most years.

Brownell isn’t paid enough to notice a player like Ja. Just ask Brownell’s mama, JK.
Also, best not to exceed our expectations, according to DRad. This is basketball, not football.

Of course this devolved into a brownell bashfest.
If we had a similar rated prospect signed in this years class you all would be crying that we have a NR recruit with no good offers committed.
Go outside and have some fun instead of constantly whining about everything, you losers.
