I'm all for it if he wins, but what's with this antiquated "traditional" of handing out awards before all the games have been played? Still sticking to that is crazy. Like awarding an Olympic track medal halfway through an event: "Okay, no need to finish - we've seen enough."

This particular award is still really based on character. That can be judged at any point in the year.
