The hospitals don’t have enough staff because they furlowed have of them last summer and now there’s another percentage (between 20-35%) that are quitting because of vax mandates. The greedy hospital conglomerates and the idiotic policies are causing the issues. There are actually open wings of many hospitals not being used that could be another ICU... but there isn’t enough staff.

You are absolutely correct!!! We are about to have a massive crisis in health care when even more staff walk out over the vaccine mandate. This is a crisis of their own creation.

Take out the non vaccinated and they would have the staff they need at the hot-spot areas where there are shortages.

Forgot to add, I realize there are shortages in a few places. Most are not having staffing issues. That said, even more reason for people to do the right thing and get vaccinated.

I’m not sure what “full” staff means so let me ask it this way

Can you name a hospital with a staff at pre-Covid levels?

New Hanover Hospital. I have friends that work there. They are fully staffed. I often hangout with hospital workers at a bar called ER. They are generally all hospital staff. Most are traveling nurses. The issue has been mentioned. Their staff has actually grown. The prob is that the area is growing so fast. You add non vaccinated Covid people and its a cluster funk.

I work in hospitals. New Hannover does have the most Covid pts in the state of NC as of a couple weeks ago. They also have one of the highest vax rates. But they are not “full” staff. Ask yourself- why would a “full” staff hospital need traveling nurses? Traveling nurses make about double what a non-traveling nurse make.
It is certainly a cluster funk! But it’s mostly self inflicted. ICU’s are not a set number of beds. The hospitals purposely try to keep ICUs at around 90% capacity. This is simple business. ICUs are expensive, so you don’t want to carry that overhead if you don’t need it. They can easily increase or decrease the number of beds. I am certainly not saying they don’t have more beds filled in the icu than they did in the spring. I am saying the issue is a staffing issue that went from bad to worse. There are also cases of nurses being “burned out” if you’re a vaxed nurse now you would be wise to jump on the “traveling” circuit and make well over $100k! There is a reason the hospitals are paying that now and it isn’t the unvaxced.
This is about to get even worse as the vax mandates in the hospitals (not Biden’s latest EO) are about to go into effect and all the hospitals I’m involved with are anticipating at least another 20% of nurses quitting.

I have asked if they notice staff shortages. They have said no. They tell me that they often have bed shortages though. That said, you probably have access to stats and they are just talking as what they see and think. I was actually in there hogging a bed with a Covid Pneumonia for over a week. That said, last time I spoke with them they said the beds on this particular night were full due to a bunch of reasons and actually a bunch of shootings. There were no beds though. I will take your word though since its your profession.

Those shootings were a mess too!

The icu’s staffs are “full” because they have to keep the staff to support the number of beds. Again- they are expensive so you can’t afford those beds being unstaffed. Someone else made a snarky comments about why hospitals would shut down elective surgeries when that’s they money maker.

The answer is staffing. The staff they had to do electives is being called on to help with the icu support. It’s certainly not what the hospitals want to do, but the federal govt is helping them financially and it’s also important to remember that the ICU is used daily even for some “elective” surgeries. As you said- Cluster Funk.

Income derived from surgery and procedures is the engine that pays for most everything. It's not taking care of COVID. Hospitals definitely respect the bottom line for sure, so it would most definitely not be in their financial interest to halt surgery.

It's actually very simple, there are a shidload of inpatients with COVID. As of June, 96% of doctors and 88% of nurses were vaxxed, so for the nurses there are burnout issues way more than the vaccine that are driving them to quit.

I understand but some have legit reasons. When hospitals refuse to consider natural immunity as a reasonable and responsible choice they get what they deserve. Many years ago the hospital where I worked made us take a flu shot. I had a really bad reaction. The next year I told them they could fire me but I’m not taking the shot. They backed down. Why can’t people make responsible and personal choices now?

So why should anyone can vaccinated for anything? Should the world just all decide to not get vaccinated for anything at all? For example, why should any immigrants or visitors to the USA have to be vaccinated? Tragically we are supposedly forcing some vaccinations for things such as measles. The horror. I guess they are having an outbreak.

You realize that most hospitals had to start buying up smaller practices (the profitable ones) in order to boost their bottom line to stay afloat after ACA passed.

The big box hospitals are not money makers.

The large conglomerates have been buying up practices for a decade or more. It’s to control the entire process and referral stream. They have also been trying to turn their businesses into socialist systems.... but that’s another issue for another day.

Of course then there's the hospital down the road from me, also full of crap I guess. It seems they said pretty much the same thing. Everyone wore a mask in church Sunday because they sent this letter to the mayor and town council, which resulted in them enacting a mask ordinance.

https://caycesc.gov/newsfiles/eo92021.pdf

SC still ticking up with ICU patients with covid. 592 as of this am. 44% of people in ICU in SC are covid patients. Biggest problem is 404 of the 596 are on vents. That's a much higher percentage than the previous iteration in January.

Traveling nurses are making a killing though.
