This is about the coolest thing ever... the #### Cavett show

Nov 14, 2021, 11:16 PM

right after Woodstock. Joni Mitchell skipped the concert on advice from her manager, who thought she wouldn't make it back in time for her scheduled TV appearance. But then Grace Slick, Stephen Stills, David Crosby, etc, all appear on the show. Stills has mud on his jeans from Woodstock the day before. What a moment in time. #### Cavett was always the cool, laid-back, intellectual talk show host.

of great stories. He went to school in New Jersey, then lived in NYC after. Went to shows at the Fillmore East almost every weekend and saw all of the big names and lived the late 60s early 70s NYC music scene. All I have to do is ask "Did you ever see _________?", then kick back and listen. Hendrix, Cream, CSN&Y, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Lou Reed, Van Morrison, King Crimson, and so on, are just a few of the ones he saw multiple times. It was a rich time to be living there for rock music.

Some of David Crosby’s comments are still applicable today.

So many Boomers seemed to have lost their ideals and souls during their life’s journey. Or was that just the foolhardiness of youth? Or just different perspectives at different times?

Sometimes I wonder _ does age bring wisdom, cynicism or simple acquiescence. Or just a small bladder that sends me to the bathroom in the middle of the night, then sleeplessness that encourages dumb ### posts in the Lunge.

I have to modify a gutter tomorrow so insomnia is better spent looking up gutter parts on Lowes.com. (Wait _ do gutter issues have some hidden meaning or just a means to resolving a simple drainage problem ? So much to ponder.)

He was that. This one is sort of historic: Paul Simon was

on the show to discuss a new song he was writing. Was stuck about halfway through, so he played it to that point and discussed how one might then proceed. If you tuned in that night you didnt know you were witnessing the first public hearing of a future iconic song. Is a short clip:

Nice. You know, back then Cavett was sort of the oddball,

slightly eccentric, New York City intellectual type. A bit quirky, but smart as he1l and had a smooth conversational style. Carson was god and could get all the A-listers like Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, whoever. Cavett got Lennon, Joplin, Bowie, Hendrix and the folks in this post Woodstock show. He was deemed "counter culture" enough that Nixon hated him and wanted to bring him down... it all came out in the Watergate tapes. Cool dude. Still kicking at 84.

I liked Cavett a lot. Also liked Bill Buckley on PBS. Both were very bright and so laid back, I had to wonder at times if some Scotch, Quaaludes or both weren’t on board.

Both were incredible at drawing out their guests.

ABC has gone down a few notches with Jimmy Kimmel who is so PC now and seems to have amnesia regarding his Man Show days. I must admit I did like Girls on Trampolines.

Glad to hear Cavett is still kicking.
