This board is a microcosm of the hate and fear that

Jun 13, 2020, 12:26 AM

is gripping our country. What recently was a means to talk about and share the love of our university and it’s sports teams is morphing into a platform of division and distrust. Don’t you know, fellow Tigers, that the evil puppeteers are positively gleeful that their plans to end this noble experiment of government for and by the people are coming to fruition. Divide and conquer is the intention. Unite and persevere, love, forgive and overcome must be our response.
So, USA USA and Go Tigers is what I say. I love my country. I love my school. I’m not perfect, but I won’t be a manipulated fool.
Flame away.

It’s hard to have a rational conversation with people that are terrorized by a name on a building.

It seems like the ones being terrorized are the ones crying because the name is being switched in a building. I hope they survive such trauma. On a different note, where do you live in Hawaii? I think you said you live there?

There may be some that the name change is very important, but my guess is the majority are against negotiating with terrorists. The name changing won’t be the end of it. They won’t be happy until people that never owned slaves are forced to kneel and beg forgiveness from people that were never slaves a day in their lives. Just because of the color of their skin.

Didn't know Deshaun Watson & Deandre Hopkins were terrorists

...thanks for filling me in on that.

There's also several other football players who've come out

Jun 13, 2020, 12:58 AM

in support of the name change. Using your 'logic', I'm guessing the Clemson Athletic Dept should be designated as a terrorist organization too?

Look, I don’t know if you are really stupid or just pretending. The Clemson players are good people and their heart is in the right place. They honestly want to do the right thing. But they are falling prey to the BLM lies and their hearts and minds are being manipulated. This is way bigger than the names of an honors program and a building. If the Trustees actions cause it all to end that would be great. I strongly doubt it. The race baiters’ entire source of income depends on fomenting this kind of divide. They are not going to stop. Conceding the Sudetenland will not achieve “peace in our time” this time either. Appeasement doesn’t work.

What lies do you think they fell for about the people the buildings were named after? You think BLM convinced Deshaun and Hopkins? You must think they are pretty stupid.

No. I think they are good hearted. I’ve met and and spoken with both of them (years ago, not during this current crisis or whatever you call it). Both Godly men.

Let’s see how this plays out ok? And see if it’s the end of it.
If it is, then yeah, I’m pretty stupid.

If not, well, you know.

See how what plays out? It seems to have played out for their buildings request. Although it was already in the works before they requested it. What are waiting to see?

If you are calling people terrorist for standing up to injustice and racism you are definitely part of the problem. It's time take a hard look at yourself.

I disagree.

The argument going is between stasis - keeping things exactly as they are - and progress.

This isn't a revolution going on. Except for some pockets of oddball Out There anarchists, there's no socialistic or anti-capitalistic revolution underway.

Black Lives Matter, at the end of the day, is a movement, not a revolution...and the difference is, movements move a certain distance...and then stop. Revolutions upend the system. Maybe I have it wrong, but what I'm seeing now is that the majority of middle America is now on board with the notion that progress on this front needs to happen; I don't see them going Solidarity, Comrade and screeching for the end of capitalism or the subjugation of white people under the rule of the new African High Emperor.

I see a desire for positive change. I don't see any kind of widespread appetite for tearing the system down, just a lot of frustration with endemic and lingering issues that a conservative segment of our culture has seemed unwilling to address for awhile.

I made an argument myself just the other day that I'm worried about judging historical figures by modern societal standards, finding them wanting, and then going around and yanking the names off every building standing every ten years because, hey, this guy advocated this or said that...but on the other hand, I'm willing to concede that striking the names of a couple of virulent racists off Clemson University's honors college and one of its most prominent buildings might not be the worst thing ever either.

Can I understand why a person of color might have problems having a flagrant racist's name on their Honors diploma? Yup. Can I understand why a person of color might really not want to look at a building named for a racist so virulent he once murdered four black men on a bridge just a couple counties over to keep them from trying to vote? Yeah, I do.

At the end of the day, those are discussions people have to be willing to have, IMHO. I wasn't for striking the names Calhoun or Tillman down either, initially, but I listened to the opposing arguments...and I am willing to concede that refusing to accord those names a place of honor at Clemson going forwards is probably the best way forwards for everybody. Ask about the name "Clemson" itself, though, and I can promise you I'd have a very different answer. But I don't think it's going to come to that, either.

Just my .02.

You simply point out an inconvenient fact, so no need to flame. Our enemies do love the idea that American democracy and our federal republic is imploding.

Tribal warfare (and hate) is our undoing.
