Thinking about something that will never come about.

Jul 25, 2021, 7:48 AM

Assume SEC is positioning itself to break away from NCAA and "do their own thing." Assume they have had talks with all the major networks about TV contracts.

Since the inception of the playoffs there have been 28 invitations given out.

In addition to TX and OU, say the SEC added FSU, Clemson, Ohio State and ND.

The SEC would have 25 of those teams. (Oregon, Michigan State and Washington have 1 invite each, none since 2016.)

I'm not predicting it. Not saying I think it would be a good idea. Just having a little fun looking at the situation and playing "what if."

If the rumor is true that the SEC is wanting to

expand by adding Clemson, FSU, Ohio State and Michigan on top of the Texas/Oklahoma deal then there is no doubt the SEC is looking to kill off the NCAA and become the de facto governing body of college athletics.

Don't know why the SEC would want to do away with the NCAA. They are never tough on its members, only other confences.

Nobody wants to do away with a "central governing body"

Jul 25, 2021, 6:40 PM

The NCAA is a front organization that serves the Power 5 conferences like a little puppy. It gets all the blame and they get all the credit. The SEC would never break away and expose itself. Their leadership isn't insane.

You mean like a powerless figurehead. Right?

"Powerless" is going a little bit too far.

The conferences want a central governing body that fans and congress can hate on. They do NOT want a "strong" governing body. One comparison that comes to mind: NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
