Things I don't understand about last night's game.

Or maybe I should say things that totally surprised me.
1. The DL couldn't get pressure on the passer. 2. The front 7 couldn't slow down, much less shut down, the running game. 3. The offense could not establish an effective passing game.
Explanation on #3. Louisville was in a two deep (cover 2) formation most of the night. 2 safeties playing zone. Tough to beat them over the top. But, there are other ways to attack that defense than 3 yard outs and bubble and tunnel screens. I'm no X and O expert, but I expected the offense to have an effective plan of attack. Didn't seem like they did.

yup. After the first 2 series, it became abundantly obvious that our entire coaching staff had been going over the wrong subjects during every team meeting for the past 2 weeks. They would have been better off watching old Jimmy Stewart movies for all those wasted hours!

2 weeks practice to look like that was very disappointing. The lack of trying much to shake it up and get going was perplexing and the ongoing field goal block stuff is just inexcusable

They were watching Jimmy Stewart movies. Unfortunately it was Vertigo rather than It’s a Wonderful Life or the Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

We seem to go very conservative against the teams we think might give us trouble. We were very conservative in our play calling against GA. At FSU, we went very conservative after taking the lead. In this game, it looked like we were so focused on not making any mistakes that we really clamped down on what we were willing to do.
It's almost like last year's Duke and FSU game screwed with Dabo's psyche and now he is laser focused on turnovers. Even the coot game last year, he insisted on the run game to maintain control and the lead. Not saying that was bad, but we just don't look confident when we play the better teams anymore.
I guess we will see how the rest of the regular season unfolds, as we will be up against some teams that will give us trouble if we don't play well...

Ways to beat cover 2 defense:
1. Stick/Flat Concept: This play utilizes a stick route (short, quick route) and a flat route. The stick route draws the attention of the cornerback, while the flat route exploits the space left open by the cornerback, creating an opportunity for a quick gain.
2. Four Verticals: This play is particularly effective against Cover 2 as it targets the deep middle of the field, which is a vulnerable area. By sending four receivers on vertical routes, it forces the safeties to make tough decisions, often leading to big plays.
3. Shot Play/Flood Concept: This involves a deep shot downfield coupled with a flood concept that attacks the flat area on the opposite side. The deep shot pressures the defense vertically, while the flood concept aims to create mismatches and exploit open areas.
4. Curl-Flat/Hitch-Seam: This play combines a curl and flat route on one side with a hitch and seam route on the other. It creates difficult coverage decisions for the defenders, opening up opportunities for completion in various zones.
5. Mesh/Shallow Cross: Utilizing a mesh concept, this play features crossing routes that create natural picks and rubs in the middle of the field. This can clear out defenders and create throwing lanes for the quarterback.
These plays can effectively exploit the weaknesses of the Cover 2 defense.

What I don’t say though, is the offensive line needs to block so CK has time to make the right read and throw.

I don't know your background - if you've ever coached football. I do trust our coaches to figure that out. If not, ww need new coaches - not you. Unless you have better credentials than I think you do.

Never coached football. But have been around the game and on the inside. Clemson grad and former assistant athletic director at a FCS school nearby, who is now enjoying retirement.

Obviously not to the extent you are. I will take your word for them. I know FSU's very limited success in passing this year has been based on the stick route. I know in general there are ways to hit guys over the middle on crossing routes forcing the LB to either cover shallow or deep and throwing it to the vacated space.
I was just shocked at how few routes I saw 10-20 yards down the field between the hashes.

How about a WR post with a TE 10-yard out? Didn't see much of that.
Of course, Cade was pretty bad at getting the ball out on time, so who knows what routes we were actually running.
