The Program Is at a Crossroads

Yesterday felt like the tipping point, did it not? I could explain away the offensive struggles against UGA as a result of UGA’s defense, which I believe to be the best defense I have seen since Bama in 2016. Ga Tech maybe you could say that the offense was disjointed due to delays and the coaches gave the unexpected scheme excuse as well; however, watching the offense have 7 straight three and outs where every drive started with a run, that would gain a max of two yards, followed by two straight passes felt different. For many of us it felt like this performance had been building for quite a while, years in fact. The generational talents of Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawernce could mask bad play calling and horrendous offensive line play. This year, there is no generational QB play, there is not even average QB play. That leads to days like yesterday where an NC State defense, who has missing three of their best players, totally dominates a Clemson offense with no creativity. And now Clemson and Dabo Swinney are being offered two paths, two futures. Dabo can remain loyal to a fault, or can make the tough decision, a decision he does not want to make. If you cast your mind back to just a few years ago Nick Saban was presented with the same crossroads. Saban was an outspoken critic of the spread offense and continued to run his NFL, pro style offense; however, Alabama continued to lose to spread offenses. Many said that the game had passed Saban by and the dynasty was over. Saban was presented with two paths, the same two Dabo is presented with, he could continue to beat his head against the wall running an out-dated and predictable offense, or he could change with the times and adapt. Saban made the tough decision and brought in Lane Kiffin to revamp his offense, and Alabama changed and the dynasty lives on as a result of that decision. Now Dabo is given the very same choice. What he does will define whether this is the end of his dynasty or merely the beginning……...

The Clemson football future and is not a binary one. Nor is Dabo's. We have had a truly remarkable run for 6 years and Clemson will be just fine in the future. We're experiencing a few bumps in the road. Happens to all teams. Dabo and the team will get back on track. If he makes personnel changes then he makes the right decision. If he does not make any personnel changes he makes the right decision. The sun was shining brightly this morning. All In! That being said, I agree that our offensive scheme needs a lot of tweaking.

Clemson will be back. Dabo built a program to last.***

Clemson Paw Do you believe that a change at the end of this season at OL is the extent of what we may see? Also, I don’t see Dabo changing OC’s, but would he consider another approach and if so, what is your opinion?

We have the 121st ranked offense out of 130 teams. We have a top 5 roster according to 247. If Dabo does not change OCs in the offseason it's safe to say he's lost it.

I think that this was Caldwell's last season regardless of what happened this season, and I expect Thomas Austin to get the nod right now.

I wish I knew what Dabo was going to do about the OC but the truth is I do not. I can guarantee that Dabo is a different person behind the scenes than he is in front of the media. He is also not stupid, he knows there are issues. There is a reason Dabo is where he is and I trust him to make the right decision.

So another hire from within? Don’t we need to be exploring outside options? Hiring from within seems to have gotten us here

The o line is very young and learning but a qb that is under 50% on completions and averaging 5 yards per completion does not win games either. Maybe we need and nil for completions over 10 yards. That might get his attention.

Bama 2016 was far and away top Defense we've faced. And DW4 and TL16 talent and audibles have allowed the Offense to survive and thrive.

Seems with the money Clemson is willing to pay. Dabo could hire a top O-line coach that really draws the O-line recruits in. If we had recruits falling over themselves to play for and know they would be developed to their very best potential. Clemson could be solid there year in and year out.

Look at our coaching hires the past 3- 5 few years. There is a type, a tendency. And it AIN'T bringing in top-tier coaching talent from the outside. Bates was probably the last "outsider" hired, but he certainly wasn't "top tier". Almost without exception the hires are "yes man", former players and buddies. Most of them have ZERO experience coaching at Power 5 schools. YOu think CJ is going to tell Dabo he is wrong? That his thinking is outdated and he is literally erasing the value he brought to the program over the last 10 years on weekly basis? Of course not. CJ is going to sit down, shut up and collect a paycheck. Why? because Dabo likes it that way.
