The problem is

We have a pass first QB in a run first offense. Looking back at DJ's stats last year he threw for 914 yards and ran for 60. He looks very much like he does not want to run the ball and maybe that is what's messing up him throwing the ball.

DJ is not a dual threat QB...

He is a pro-style QB.

He's not an any-threat QB I hate to say.

We saw glimpses of it last year against Notre Dame and BC.

that is what I wonder about. If he had last year's weapons now how would he do? Why does he look like a totally different guy?

I sometimes look at the guys on the field and wonder if they are thinking “what else can go wrong for us”?

With the 9 drops removed from the last 2 games, DJ's completion percentage would be roughly 68% for his last 2 games.

DJ was awful at the beginning of the year. DJ has done what he can to improve his level of play.

He is still making mistakes as do all QBs, but he has elevated his game in the last 2.

Choosing to see him as still awful is a fault of the viewer.

I just hope he can keep playing at a higher level until the offense comes together and gets to see some better results.

He was making good progress until the shuttle pass debacle.

There's just no excuse for that.

Completely agree with that. No excuse to have an INT on the 2nd safest pass play in the game.

I felt he started pressing again in the 2nd half and his level of play dropped off some.

I don't know if it was because we were down or because he was starting to not trust his WRs/blocking but either way it affected his play.

I thought he got it back together for the last drive, but it didn't really matter at that point in the game.

He's currently too immobile to be a good QB. Even Georgia

and Kirby Smart understand that your QB has to be mobile in all levels of football.

But he's not totally immobile. He actually made some good runs against Pitt. It's just that he seems to disdain the run. Wants to sit back and throw. This is fine if the Oline is great and the receivers are great. We have neither this year.

His best run against Pitt was a designed pass play.

Taking off on a pass play is something that he is not comfortable with or very skilled at to this point, but it is an area where he is improving.

He knows where the ball is going before the play is snapped because he has been in the league since the turn of the century.

The game has changed.

Kelly Bryant was the last run first QB that Clemson put on the field for any considerable amount of time and he was also the first QB with that style in Dabo's tenure.

Recently:

Boyd passed first but was able to run. He broke ACC passing records. He did well with designed runs but struggled to get going when trying to scramble.

Stoudt passed first and could not run well.

Watson passed first (broke tons of GA high school PASSING records) but was able to run. Best designed runner and scrambler of the pass first QBs.

Bryant ran first as stated above. His purpose was to bridge a gap until we got another passer. Bryant's season is the only year since Woody Dantzler played that we ran a QB run first offense for the length of a season.

Lawrence passed first (broke a number of Watson's records) but was able to run. He scrambled well and did ok with designed runs. People think they remember him being great on designed runs because of his run vs Ohio St but mostly he picked up some yards on read plays because people keyed so hard on ETN.

DJ is also a pass first QB. I know it's been a long time since Boyd played but his running style and ability is very similar to Boyd. DJ is probably the least agile of the runners and struggles to get the body going. That makes sense because he is 20 lbs. heavier than any of the others.

Your assessment that we have had a long line run first offense QBs is completely false. Clemson is good when their QB's can throw the ball and have enough element of the run game to keep teams a little honest.

I said he is a pass first QB in a run first offense; Clemson wants to be a running offense or at least balanced. They do not want to throw the ball 60-70 times a game. DJ wants to just throw the ball and not follow the RPO.

Check the percentages.

Clemson has not been a run first offense recently. The only thing that has made it remotely close in the last few seasons is because we have had big leads and resorted to a heavy running game to sit on the clock.

If you look at the first half of Clemson games going all the way back to Morris, there are rare occasions where Clemson ran the ball more than they threw it only when the opposing defense was so bad that we didn't have a chance to throw it because the run plays were long TDs (think Louisville 2018).

Morris pushed the idea of a "smashmouth running spread" when he arrived, but then he saw what his WR corp looked like in 2011 and he decided we should chunk it down the field over and over instead.

2017, as I stated, is the only year Clemson was a run first offense.

Statistically speaking, the problem is, in 43% of our games the other team had accumulated more total points than us when the final whistle sounded.
