March Madness. That is literally the main thing they do - they run that event. I suppose they run the baseball tournament in Omaha too.
They do almost literally nothing related to recruiting, policies and sport rules. Very especially with regards to football.
So, the conferences have now defunded the police.. so.. they'll reap what they sowed. Tell me how this ends.

They make sure to fine athletic departments for rulez violations.
They’re kinda like an H.O.A.
A worthless bunch of babies that steal money from schools they think they own with BS fines
