The Good Ole' NIL

Just trying to get other folks feelings. I am under the impression that Clemson is already suffering from the NIL contracts. I am not talking about locker room issues or the "he's making more than me issues". I am talking about how players getting paid effects said players desire to play the game. People keep telling me not to go back to the 2018 National Championship game and how the athletes we have are different now. But for Justyn Ross I fully expected him to be the same dude I saw back then. I know he has been injured and I know he had neck surgery off the field for a year etc, but so was Mike Williams and he came back better. I just find that two of the biggest parts of our offense, who have probably the bigger of the NIL contracts on the team are grossly under-performing.

You know the I'm paid so it doesn't matter how I play mentality.

Notable NIL NCAAFB athletes:

Spencer Rattler: BUST
DJU: BUSH
Sam Howell: Went to **** after signing
Brice Young: Absolutely killing it
Justyn Ross: Started his own lame-@** clothing line
Braden Galloway: More obsessed with his 100K+ instagram followers and what it nets him than football....
Bockhorst got a NIL deal to plug Ice Cream (or some such 5h1t)

NIL - I don't see how ANY company would want to chance this garbage again.

Never underestimate the supidity of corporate marketing departments. The same people who sell advertising, make commercials and provide marketing advice to companies are in charge of creating the metrics that measure how effective marketing is. There is very little unbiased empirical evidence that any of it actually works.

NIL has zero impact. Mike Williams had Deshaun Watson as his QB in 2016 Justyn had Trevor in 2018. He also had Tee Higgins, Hunter Renfrow, and Travis ETN; there’s a lot less pressure when you are the 4th or 5th option in the offense. Also, there are a whole lot of receivers, including Mike Williams, in the NFL making a whole lot more money that any college kid and playing at very high levels.

I've heard this bandied about a lot but I don't know that it really is a factor.

Consider, while the NIL money is potentially substantial, it's not round one NFL draft type money. So I imagine they still want to play well to get drafted and make more impressive sums of money.
Additionally, if NIL money was driving worse play, wouldn't we be seeing it more across the board? Especially since Clemson has made its bones out of recruiting 'character' guys... would it not make sense that it would impact us less than other teams who were 'win at all cost'?

And I don't know that you do see it across the board. Some kids have played poorly (Spencer Rattler comes to mind) or rather more poorly than expected, after getting NIL money and others haven't... like most years I expect.

Our down year just so happened to come after the NIL came through, but I don't see any reason to think that our guys would be especially impacted by the 'I've got some cash, now let me not play as hard' mindset.

I am sure it is subconscious, players want to play as well

as last year, but with all that money, they just can't get that fire in the belly like last year, as much as they want to...

I don't think Rattler's problem has anything to do with NIL. Hes just not that good

and never was. He got overhyped because he was the next Lincoln Riley QB, but he never played all that well last year, and never would've been the Heisman favorite had he played virtually anywhere else. Most OU fans had a very different perception of Rattler than the national media. They were never sold.

I don't buy it. That's just a lame excuse.

Georgia is faring perfectly well and so are most of the other top tier programs that you would expect to have many NIL deals.

You know what I do think? I think alot of fans don't like NIL so they are trying to blame everything that goes wrong on it.

but, with more money than they have ever seen, they just cannot get that fire back in their belly, and I am sure they would like to...hopefully, by Pittsburgh game?
