The ACC has done absolutely nothing for Clemson. Get out now

Clemson and FSU should both dump the ACC. The conference wreaks of Tobacco Road and only protects its inner circle. They deserve to wither away and die like the weaklings that the truly are. The conference is and will stay weak indefinitely with Duke and North Carolina running the place. Duke getting away with purchasing Zion Williams and UNC giving away free degrees with no penalties is the last straw.

Will you be paying that $50M exit fee with cash or a check?***

Well, with the new expected TV contract with OK and Texas joining, each SEC school is expected to receive up to $80M a year in the near future. It would, economically be a wise decision. The current ACC contract is poultry, to say the least, and runs into the 2030's. Thanks swoffy!

The ACC owns most of Clemson's TV

rights till about 2036 regardless of which conference they are in.

You do know those rights exist only in an ACC contract. If CU is no longer a part of the ACC, they are no longer bound by any ACC contracts. That would be like saying that Clemson in the SEC would still have to pay their share of football revenue to the ACC.

as a member school we agreed to this - it was unanimous

we owe this until 2036 and we are contractually bound. That's probably in the neighborhood of a half a billion $ spread over those 15 year. The ante was upped and the league moved to this as a protection when Maryland left as their exit fee was a flat $50mil(reduced to like $30mil in a settlement). The lawyers/league got wise to better protections. Could a lawsuit and settlement be reached? - maybe but the ACC would have the upper hand and that settlement would probably be at least about 1/2 that amount(~250mil). There is a reason OU and TX announced now and are sticking with the B12 through 2025. And that was only 4 years away not 15. Also, conferences don't extend invites anymore unless a team opens that door- the schools have to go to them and request -- that's why there is an order things occur. This avoids tampering/lawsuits between leagues, etc.

15 years is too long of a period to consider striking a exit price in the $100's of millions in hopes of an SEC invite and having the difference be made up with the higher rev. If it was a few years then maybe but my guess is a lot more will occur in the next 15 years to college football and you don't want to incur that type of debt and then the revenues drop. You'd put yourself in position to BK your athletic dept.

Best path is ND full membership, adding B10 schools, and/or forming alliance with B1G and/or P12. Both of those leagues have Grant of Rights expiring in the next 2-3 years. That means those teams are more of free agents than any team in the ACC.

Go the Texas and OU route. Set the exit for a few years in the future, knowing that without the two premier members of the conference the conference may n longer be viable. If the conference collapses, then you don't owe anyone any money.

Where is Clemson going to go?

Jul 27, 2021, 1:54 PM

The $EC doesn't want or need Clemson and the B1G is a terrible fit culturally and geographically.

Agree 100%

We have no choice but to "dance with the one who brung us", but hopefully we can show some leadership in helping to make her a little prettier.

Gotta love the fact as you state, that CU "has no choice" regarding the decisions they make regarding their future as a football team. Wonder if Dabo and Rad know that?

Look, I know you want to blow the whole thing up

Jul 27, 2021, 2:35 PM

Does that mean I am not allowed an opinion? Admittedly, I have talked to neither Drad, Dabo (or President Clements) about this, but I do not believe that it would be financially feasible for us to leave, even if we were invited. And last I checked, we DID have to be invited to join a different conference. Go ahead, talk your wild fantasies all you want, but you are living in a dream world.

And have you spoken to the ACC commish, and he told you exactly what regarding not wanting Clemson?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg2013_nascar_champ.gif2014_nascar_champ.gif flag link

I'm assuming you mean the SEC commish?

Jul 27, 2021, 2:55 PM

I think the argument could be made that if the $EC wanted or felt like it needed Clemson, an invitation would have been extended a long time ago when they added Arky, uof6c, Missouri and A&M.

But what would the ROI be on higher conference payouts

Jul 27, 2021, 2:45 PM

I’m not sure our financial decision making process but we’d make it back in a few years.

Just saying

Fully agree. The conference seems to always be a step behind, and completely screwed the pooch in order to get a linear network. Clements and Rad should already be talking to the SEC through back channels, because at this point, outside of ND, there's not a school you can add that brings any prestige to the conference, and what is available is AAC and Sun Belt quality.

I hear through the Columbia, SC grapevine that the football team that meets downtown occasionally there is looking to move out of the SEC to a lower level for a few years to relieve the pressure. Just a rumor of course. I have no first hand knowledge of queries made from inside their school or anything.

Nobody has asked us to the dance.

Re: Where are we going to go?

Jul 27, 2021, 2:25 PM

And how do you know that? Do you think the SEC is going to call a press conference and announce that they have invited Clemson to the dance. Did they announce anything about Texas and Oklahoma being invited to the dance six months ago? Guess I missed that announcement.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg2013_nascar_champ.gif2014_nascar_champ.gif flag link

So you think we can just tell the SEC we want to join?

[1]
Jul 27, 2021, 3:44 PM

Believe me, I'm sure Clemson has asked. Probably multiple times through back channels over the years (particularly when the last round of realignment went down in 2011-2012). If they wanted us, it would be a done deal by now just like UT and OU.

Completely agree. Most Folks in NC don't give a crap about college football because they have never had a consistently winning team, so they are all in on basketball.

What wut?

The ACC has provided a good path to the national title. Titles and championships matter. We ain't the coots that only want a paycheck. We want hardware and the ACC does provide that. Both FSU and Clemson have both had 4 national title appearances since the BCS/CFP and a few other top 5 finishes (including VT). If Miami every got their act together, it would look a bit better.

That is better than basically anyone NOT named Alabama

OSU has 2 titles and 3 championship appearances.
Auburn has only 1 appearance, 1 title
LSU has 3 titles, 1 appearance
OU has 1 title, three appearances

So, in order to play for a title, most teams, regardless of conference, has about 4 appearances, OSU had 5 and then Alabama. LSU, FSU, OU, and Clemson all have 4 title appearances. since the start of the BCS. The Pac12 only has 4 title appearances - COMBINED. The B10 outside of OSU has - None. Then you have Florida, Tennesee, and Georgia combined for four appearences.

I agree.

I'm not sure what the ACC does for Clemson (or any of the other teams for that matter) but when they decided to sh*t of the fans at the ACC Championship game a few years ago (b/c NC govt stood up to pervert transvestites wanting to use women's restrooms) and moved the game to FLA (when the game was between CU and VT and Charlotte was directly between).....

I've come to the conclusion that the ACC/B10/Pac12 and the NCAA are nothing more than power-mechanisms used to garner millions while influencing political motives throughout college sports

flag link

Unfortunately I feel like we are stuck in the ACC and are

[1]
Jul 27, 2021, 2:51 PM

going to have to make the best of it and hope others in the league improve. I'm most concerned about the SEC expanding and increasing the number of conf games and it essentially eliminates non conf games with us. I could see that easily happening with them wanting to keep the money.

I still think our best option is a play for ND. Force their hand, if the answer is no, so be it.

Then invite OK St and Baylor/TCU/. Imo, that gives us market, a good conference for ALL sports. As for FB, we don't need the competition because as Dabo always says, we play Clemson.

If we broke up with ND how long would it take for the SEC

Jul 27, 2021, 3:31 PM

to invite them? Do you think they would accept?

2021 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link

Gives an easier path to the NC than the SEC in FB & in '82

Jul 27, 2021, 4:07 PM

it gave us an additional year of probation.

All a little boy would ever want.
