THE 2 things that concern RB the most for the Jawja game

1) Interior of Oline (tackles look good but issues at guard/center cannot continue)
2) Back end of defense (Safeties)

Had to really think about #2, it's almost a toss-up with:

3) depth at QB

What do ya'll think?

I think we will pass them into oblivion just like we did versus Notre Dame even with a green QB and some of our best WRs.missing.

My concern is that ... a, the DL get to the UGA QB to take the pressure off the back-end of our defense and that the front seven can neutralize the Dawg running game.

Just my humble opinion.

I don't think DL will be our issue this year with the talent we have and the up and coming depth we are adding. If anything, it should help mask our weakness at safety.

For a guy that barks as much as DK does, it’s surprising how often he shies away from contact. I think we’ll go right at him.

I agree that DK doesn't seem to want any part of the physical side of the game. There's a breakdown out there showing how effective running right at him can be.

With that being said, UGA is the best tackling defense in the Power 5 as rated by PFF (93.4 overall tackling grade), so while I don't expect DK to suddenly be a much better tackler, I do think there will be 10 other guys that can help to make up for him.

Good thread. And I pretty much agree.
You guys have certainly one of, if not the best DL in the country. But ours is right up there, particularly the interior. DJ has a cannon, but he is notably less effective if forced to move out of (or even around within) the pocket. I'm guessing that getting inside pressure will be part of our plan.
I'm probably not as down on your safety'a as you are, but on a similar note, I do think your LBs can be vulnerable vs the pass. I'm thinking we'll try to stretch those guys some. Of course that can be easier said than done.
And QB depth is not an issue until it is. Y'all may not have the best plan B there, but realistically how often do QBs miss time? (not that often).

On the flip side, I think our biggest concern is what I mentioned above, and that's your DL. We're kinda opposite of y'all there in that our interior OL looks pretty stout, but our Tackles have to be sorted out. We're gonna have to figure out a way to mitigate the rush.
And obviously our corners vs your WRs. One unknown is whether Ross can shake off the rust first game back. And that kinda goes for the rest of your corps. You've got a lot of talented guys, but they're all stepping up into larger roles this year. But if everyone shows out day 1, we could be in trouble.

I know most of y'all here think it's gonna be a blow out, so I guess we'll just have to see. I for one am glad the rivalry is back, and can't wait for kickoff!

Perhaps I'm in the minority here, and I wear orange-colored glasses most of the time, but I don't think this will be a blowout by either side. It will probably come down to the last 1-2 possessions of the game.

I'm just downright skeptical of our interior O Line. Until we see some improvement in run-blocking, I'm not buying all this talk about how "physical" and "nasty" they are. We heard the same thing last pre-season and we all know how that turned out. Every time we lined up against an elite D Line, we got man-handled. Obviously, I hope they improve from last year. If they do, ya'll are in for a long night.

The good news is a loss isn't a deal-breaker for either team to make the CFP---just hoping for a clean, injury-free game.

I agree, I don't think it'll be a blowout either way as well. I figured y'all would be favored by about 3 or 4, and that's right where it is.

Both teams have similarities: strong DL, good LBs, y'all have strong CBs but suspect Safety's, we have strong Safety's but suspect CBs.
We both have talented, experienced QBs, young but deep WRs (Ross is the X-factor there, and may very well give y'all the edge), and we've talked about the OLs. I think we may have an edge at RB.

As for the CFP, I don't think the outcome of this game will impact your Tigers at all. Y'all will be in win or lose, because no one else on your schedule will stay within 10 points of you guys, including whoever you face in the ACC-CG. The only way a 12-1 ACC Champ Clemson gets left out of the CFP is if there are 4 other undefeated Power 5 teams, and since Ohio St plays Oregon, that's not going to happen. But it's a different story for UGA. If we beat y'all, we're very likely in even if we lose in the SEC-CG. We'd be favored in every other game, and a 12-1 SEC Runner-up UGA would be hard to leave out if that 12 included a win over Clemson. But if we lose, we'd have to run the table - including wining the SEC-CG - to get in. Possible, as we've done that before, but still a tall task.

But yeah, hopefully clean, injury-free football!

Qualify comments on DJ. In two starts be rolled up almost 800 yards behind a sub-par O’line and no one but Powell to throw it to over 30 yards. That and he couldn’t run against ND in one of those two games… smh.

If DJ couldn't run vs ND, do you think he'll be able to against UGA? Pressuring him from the inside looks to be a key to our game. He did go downfield to your TE for ~30 yards vs ND, and twice to Etienne vs BC (that's not counting a couple short throws that Etienne and Rogers turned into big gainers in those games). But if we can get that inside pressure, will he be able to go downfield? And of course his top 3 targets, Powell, Rogers & Etienne, are all gone. If he can, that will bode well for your guys.

Ah, you didn’t do your homework I see… Sorta like I’ve seen from you before. He didn’t run against ND because he was injured… They scrubbed it from the playbook… That said and to answer your question, yes, he will have success running on UGA. Yes he will get it downfield with pressure because our QB’s are mobile - Boyd, Deshaun, Trevor, DJ. Same offense, different opposing jersey color. Again, you didn't do your homework. Had our WR Corp not been hurt throughout the season you’d have seen the yards spread by an order of magnitude. That’s a fact.

You do realize Powell was our second string guy as we had 3 starting WR’s out most of the season last year, Justin Ross, Ngata & Marshall were all hurt.

Our run game would have opened up much better last year if we could have stretched the field with our WR’s as normal. Our run game was hindered by the fact our field stretchers were hurt. Not many top teams could have covered up losing their top 3 WR’s especially against top 4 talent.

Actually I've mentioned those injuries several times here on TNet. I've also talked about how talented they are as well as some of your other guys. What I haven't seen you guys mention very much is can they perform at their "A" level in their 1st game back with a new QB vs a quality opponent? Maybe they can, and as I've said, if so we could be have our hands full. But that's not a given.

Yet you didn’t mention it in your analysis here likely because it doesn’t fit your narrative.

“Can they play A level first game back with new QB?” Yes. DJ didn’t play that much less than Daniels last year and arguably Daniels didn’t play any quality opponents… Mizzou, Cola, Miss St, Cinci… Not exactly a gauntlet. Can UGA?

That’s a ridiculous question that can only be answered during and after the game.

DK versus LSU and Ohio St provided a video clinic of what not to do at DB - IMHO DK may be one of UGA’s biggest liabilities vs. DJ along with Kirby’s overconfidence and Offensive conservatism. I see UGA jumping out to slim lead and Tigers piling it on in 3rd and 4th qtrs as Kirby tries to refocus UGA offense gloating from 1st qtr successes.

Not sure where you got that DJU is "notably less effective if forced to move out of (or even around within) the pocket" but that's just not true. He's special and throws a very nice ball on the move.

I agree with your concerns.

Hear are mine (in order):

1. Dabo's teams often don't start seasons on fire. Obviously they will prepare differently this year since UGA is the first opponent.

2. O-line. I'm concerned they will get eaten for breakfast. DJ better have a couple of hot read options each play and Elliott better not be planning on a bunch of 7-step drops. By season's end, I expect our O-line to be just fine. But playing UGA game 1 puts them in a hot spot early.

3. Secondary. Primarily the safeties, but if Fred Davis is distracted or doesn't play, we could be in trouble at CB.

4. Our tendency to give up huge plays early in big games. Sometimes it takes CBV a couple of series to gauge the opposing offense before locking in.

One thing in our favor is the D-line might apply enough pass rush to cover up the secondary. The NY Giants won their two most recent Super Bowls that way. So did Tampa Bay earlier this year.

I'm of similar concerns. I'll add my concerns are our running game. With our RBs - no ETN this year. RB-By-Committee with no stand-out (yet?) but plenty of 'acceptable' guys back there. No QB depth behind Big5inco so do we dare run DJU much? So that pretty much limits our offense to keeping him upright and slinging it all over the field.

And one thing I've noticed too - true, we have veteran defense - but its seems like after LSU, OSU, even BC last year...offensive coaches are getting a handle on how to compete vs Venables and any sign stealing he may or may not do.

I should have prefaced all of that with 'fall camp hasn't even started yet'. Who knows what the team even looks like by the time we get to Charlotte?

If DJU gets those numbers on the ground, then Clemson absolutely wins the game.

UGA's run D is gap sound and they rally to the ball and tackle well. I expect DJU's rushing numbers will be closer to under 15 yds especially if we're taking losses on sacks into account.

DJU can certainly be effective in the short yardage game with his size alone, but he isn't explosive and most likely won't break of runs in chunks. Also, without a true bell-cow RB with the loss of ETN, UGA's defense will key more heavily on DJU which will limit his yardage.

I think our corners will be a strength even with Kendrick now in the wrong uniform on opening day .
