Tennis: Clemson takes down Miami in Auburn Invitational

Sep 18, 2021, 8:31 AM

AUBURN, Ala. - (release) The Clemson men's tennis team took on the University of Miami in the Auburn Invitational on Friday, winning six singles and two doubles matches at Yarbrough Tennis Center.

“It was a fantastic start for the team," head coach Robbie Weiss said. "Our guys showed a lot of fight, grit and toughness which will be key to our growth as a program. Our doubles were good, but we still have quite a bit of work to do before the spring. I was pleasantly surprised at where we are in singles so early in the fall and excited to build on the really good performances today.”
In singles play, Teo Guisca defeated Bojan Jankulovski of Miami 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, while Ryuhei Azuma won 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 over Dan Martin and Jorge Plans Gonzalez won over Juan Martin Jalif, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6.

Yizhou Liu defeated Ilarion Danilchenko 6-4, 6-0, while Miami's Casper Christensen won 7-6 (10-8), 0-6, 4-0 (ret.) over Matthew Pitts.

Spencer Whitaker defeated Franco Aubone (Miami) 6-4, 6-1 and Oren Vasser of Miami defeated Maxwell Smith 6-1, 6-1.

Since Miami had just seven players to Clemson's 10, Auburn filled in the last three matches: Jackson Ross of Auburn defeated Andrew Puscas 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, while Trey Stinchcomb won 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 7-5 over Josh Raab.

Spencer Gray of Auburn defeated Daniel Labrador, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

In doubles play, Miami's Martin and Danilchenko defeated Giusca and Liu 8-6, while Azuma and Whitaker won 8-6 over Aubone and Christensen.

Jalif and Vasser of Miami defeated Smith and Pitts 8-2, and Miami's Jankulovski and Auburn's Gray defeated Stinchcomb and Puscas 8-6, but Plans Gonzalez and Labrador won over Raab and Ross 9-8.

The Tigers will return home next weekend for the second Clemson UTR tournament at the Duckworth Family Tennis Center.
