Taisun Phommachanh Was a 4-Star Recruit FYI

DJU is a 5-star bust so far. One of the recurring themes we keep hearing from the DJ sunshine pumpers is that we don't have a big time QB waiting to take over.

Does that mean 4-star QB's are that bad? TP was a solid 4-star dual threat QB recruit from the main scouting evaluating services I've seen.

Remember when Dabo used to say that players that practiced hard deserve playing time? Remember how Dabo used to talk about how important it was to give back-ups playing time when the game was still undecided to give experience? Remember how he used to brag about giving walk-on's a chance? I guess TP must be stinking the place up in practice to not even earn the chance for one or two series.

Let'a not kid ourselves. Dabo and TE are coaching scared right now. They are scared to bench DJU because he will enter the portal.

In less than 4 years the entire landscape of college football has changed. What you are seeing now is a coach having to choose between the culture he has created and been successful with, and the FREE AGENCY / PAY FOR PLAY culture that will continue going forward.

What do you think Big Dave is seeing right now? I'm sure everything that's happening is someone else's fault. I'm pretty dang sure we wouldn't be much worse if not better if DJ hit the portal.

Wondering if they are going to transfer at the end of the year either way then steam roll the program blaming it on the coaching staff that could be a bad outcome

I sure hope not, it would impact recruiting. I support them all but our past QB transfers haven't exactly gone on to flourish elsewhere. Shout out to Zerrick Cooper on beating FSU though.

he was a 4 star, but he passed very little in high school. His passing ability has improved, but he still has a little way to go IMHO.

The young man has wheels! He would not be sacked as much as DJ. He passes well enough for slant over the middle.

Joseph Charleston was also a 4* player out of high school. Yet either his practices and/or his limited game performance did not seem enough for Mr. Charleston to merit more playing time.

I realize that it sounds inconsistent when Dabo says that hard-working back-ups deserve to get playing time when the game is still on the line ... but then the backup QB doesn't see any meaningful time. It may be prejudicial to suggest that the QB position is more important than the DB position when it comes to squeezing in playing during meaningful minutes for the back-ups ... but here goes:

The QB position is too important to utilize back-up QBs for 'student driving' experiments. Sure, when the back-up QB has proven in practice to be really good / really capable of driving the offense, and when the starter QB struggles, then of course the back-up QB gets playing time. (Witness T.Lawrence getting playing time when K.Bryant had struggled.)

If you want other examples from Dabo's team for back-up QBs in which generational talent (e.g., TL) was not involved, go back to Tajh Boyd (back-up in 2010) taking over during meaningful minutes for Kyle Parker. T.Boyd wasn't ready yet in 2010, and it showed. But K.Parker had gotten worse as the 2010 season had progressed, so they gave T.Boyd a look. Whereas (and I know this isn't popular to the DJ haters) DJ has gotten better as 2021 has progressed. It is hard for us to remain objective when we all so frustrated with the offense's performance thus far in 2021, but it really helps each of us if we strive to remain objective and pay attention to the details.

You're right. DJ has progressed from a grade F to a D in 6 games. Yep. That's improving. So we can't bench him because he is improving. At this rate he will improve to grade C by the end of the season.

Your argument is illogical.

You’re pumping up a guy who is 18 of 39 (46% completion) for 148 yards with 3 yes 3 interceptions to ONE Touchdown (against SC State) for his 3 year Clemson career. The coaches know exactly what they’re doing.

If our backup QB can’t step in and run the offense with little to no drop off, then heads need to roll. To say our coaches aren’t playing Taison because he’s not capable only makes this staff look bad. They either can’t evaluate talent or they can’t develop it. Taison has been here 3 years and there is no improvement. If that’s truly the case then one or more coaches need to go.

If your team is losing and falling behind, then you can bring the backup in. Fact is, we have not been down by more than one score all year, except maybe 10-0 at Georgia. You risk throwing away a tight game when you bring an unproven backup in. We were either up or tied the whole game on GT, BC, and Syracuse. We were never down by more than 7 to NC State.

certain players not developing happens to everybody. I would also argue that our roster has been stacked to the point that Chase Brice and Zerrick Cooper knew they had to go elsewhere if they wanted a chance to play before Trevor Lawrence left which makes the staff a victim of their own success on the recruiting trail. I would also argue that those circumstances do not make our staff look bad. In fact my argument would be that given Dabo & Co’s track record any fan who constantly belly aches and bashes the staff over who they chose to start at QB when there is plenty of statistical evidence to back the staff’s decision looks bad.

BTW I love Taison and hope he develops into a good one but there is absolutely nothing that he has done when he has been given the chance to play that would suggest that he is a better option than DJ.

We don’t have a capable backup, correct? How does that not make our staff look bad? It’s not like our backup is a freshman, he’s been on campus for 3 years and he’s no further along than when he first arrived.

People aren’t saying replace DJ with Taison permanently, at least I’m not. Just put him in for a series to see if something sparks. If not, what has it hurt, chances are you were going 3 and out anyway.

Having the number one overall pick in the NFL draft playing for three years causing multiple transfers at the QB position makes the staff look bad? Having a four star player not develop in three years makes our staff look bad? Possibly missing on your evaluation of a recruit looks bad? I have news for you, those things happen everywhere all the time. Unlike other programs around the country Dabo doesn’t make up for any shortcomings on the recruiting trail by yanking scholarships after he over signs and pulls from the portal to make up for those shortcomings in order to fill his roster.

That's really bad.

All I'm saying is give TP a series or two to see how he handles a real game playing with the first stringers. He may tank. But I have seen many times where a new QB1 can create a spark and the offense plays better.

I'll bet you are one of those goobers that corrects people spelling...

After 2 recent natty's and one helluva a run, I've expected a down year. In fact I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner. I have also been around long enough to have experienced the Red Parker years so I'm thankful for the great run we've enjoyed. If you are 18 or younger, you really have no idea of how bad things can get.

What I don't like is the BS being shoveled at us. Dabo is finally starting to admit this team is not elite this year. He should have been preparing fans from the beginning that we are going tp have growing pains at key positions. Dabo and Elliot telling us DJU is is doing great is horse pucky. I like living in a world of how things are rather than they should be.

It’s ridiculous that a 4-star qb in his 3rd year in the program hasn’t developed enough to be the starting qb. There’s absolutely no way he should be that far behind DJ in ability.

This speaks to the point I have made across TNET: "who do you have as his position coach? Why isn't he getting as much or more of the blame for the performance of the Tigers offense"?

We had Jeff Scott for Tajh, Deshaun and a year with Trevor! Now, we have Brandon Streeter, who is a good guy, but "is he a good QB developer and coach"?

Nobody wants to answer that - it's just pin the whole thing on Coach Elliott!

DJU isn't developing and Taisun isn't developing - why? I'm a arm-chair coach and like any good ACC(arm chair coach) I can tell you DJU stairs down his receivers, he aims the ball instead of throwing an in rhythm pass, etc. For every practice I haven't been to and all that other jazz - if what I am saying isn't the truth because it's from me: "what do you say when the experts say the same thing then"?

You aren't going to be accurate out there when your feet are like his are. Flat footed. Air mailing simple 7-routes, etc.

In truth - you can replace the play caller - but keep the same non-developer in QB's in the role and I feel the offense still sputters.

Good call out. I was mistaken!

I still feel J. Scott presence on the sideline is hurting the overall adjustments that need to be made. Or T. Elliott needs to get out of the booth and do it "in game"! Something is missing!

There is only one answer that makes sense- Number 7 is still not healthy enough to take the reps. No one expected him to even be available this season given the injury in the Spring. Maybe he is healthy enough to play some spot duty but not healthy enough to take the normal amount of reps in practice.

Star ratings I have to add sometimes are mis-leading! I know a kids camp performance weighs huge when going up "In DRILLS"(not actual football) against other players in camp. Some kids are amazing in shorts; but they don't bring it when the pads get put on. Not saying that's the case with Taisun at all. Just saying - you have to be careful about star ratings as even some 5 star can't miss prospects are subject to being college bust. Many may get an NFL opportunity just based off their body-type sometimes.
