Sunday .... er, Friday Sermon: The Carolina Sweep

Nov 27, 2015, 4:19 PM

Unless you have a living memory of the Reagan Administration, you've never seen Clemson complete a Carolina Sweep. Nor have you seen Clemson alone, atop the mountain of college football.

This year, if we're going to see one, we need to see the other. If we are going to breathe the rarefied air reserved for champions, Clemson must destroy both Carolinas.

Clemson arriving at William-Brice for Saturday's kickoff.

We must be more thorough than Sherman. We must savage Columbia to the point that NO coach ... including the ones that labored under Spurrious ... will want to be there any longer. A simple win is not enough. Clemson stands at the verge of perfection, and I will be d@mned if anything as imperfect as cretinous Capons will stand in the way.

That leaves the other Carolina.

Clemson is coming! Clemson is coming!

The one that so many younger Clemson fans have yet to develop a proper hatred toward. The Bluebellies. The original Cheeseheads. The "we're better than you because we say so, but we'll pretend to tolerate you until your back is turned and we'll entertain ourselves by making barnyard sounds and pretending they came from you" Tar Heels.

In Clemson's football history only one game with these pansy blue pomposities has meant so much. Like the game in eight days ... yes, only EIGHT DAYS to destiny) it was a game that most feel punched Clemson's ticket to the Orange Bowl against Nebraska.

We won that day in a great, grueling slobberknocker. If history is to repeat itself, the defense will have to rise again.

Only twice in Clemson history have the Tigers beaten the Capons and the Goats in back-to-back games. And both times, at least one of the games was in the welcoming confines of Death Valley.

We have no such comfort this time. No hill to descend, no full-throated host to lean on if things get tough.

This most important Carolina Sweep of all time will have to take place on the road. With the whole world watching.

If we are up to it, no man can say the Tigers are not worthy of a national playoff. They may wish it in their hearts, they may long for it at night ... but if we can complete the third Carolina Sweep, there will be no doubt.

We need only prove it tomorrow and eight days hence against foes who will feel the full fury of men who will not be denied.

Clemson is worthy.

We ARE worthy.

Time to prove it, men!
