Special Teams

We all know the special teams woes from last night. This has been going on a long time. The onside kick and kickoff return for TD cost Clemson a National Championship against Bama. There was a blocked kick in last year’s FSU game that would have won us that game. We should be called fair catch U because we rarely seem to actually return a punt. Dabo is too good of a coach to settle for this!!! Why do you think he doesn’t seem to put emphasis on improving this? I would love to hear what everyone thinks about it. Go Tigers. Just win out!!!!

As you grow older you look at things from a more positive side. We made 5 field goals yesterday and had a punting average of over 47 yards a kick. Not many teams can match those kind of numbers. We most definitely have to do a better job blocking on field goals and is an easy fix.

He has a great record as a coach and correcting problems. You remind me of a guy that I used to work with, he never was in a meeting for over 10 minutes with out saying "You Can't do that, Don't you know it Won't work (we called him CDW). I shut him up one day by saying "It's our job to make it work."

It's Dabo's job to make it work and win ball games.

Special teams has never been a priority for Dabo. That’s very obvious. We don’t care about the punt or kick return game either

A blocked punt would be nice every once in a while but we go safe 90% of the time. The lack of blocking on that left side is inexcusable when it happens twice.

Yep. The winningest coach in ACC history doesn't care about special teams.

I don't know if "doesn't care" is correct but it

certainly doesn't seem to be a priority. Dabos Clemson teams always rank in the bottom 1/3rd of the country in special teams efficiency.

Yeah, Dabo has done a whole lotta winning without making special teams a priority. I’m not complaining. Just stating. He cares about kick/punt coverage and making field goals. All the other things are a wash.

Look, you don't have to agree with me, but there are three phases to football. I simply believe that Dabo can improve the third phase (special team) to a level to match the other two. If best is the standard, then make it that for all three phases! As I pointed out, there have been times that the lack of emphasis has shown up on the field.

Not sure what you disagree with. That Dabo can improve the third phase (special teams)? That there are not three phases of football? I don’t think either is debatable.

Our punt returns would probably score an A this past Saturday.

On the field goal protection, almost every team moves a tackle over to the wide side of the field when on or near the hash to protect the direction of the ball flight. We had the same amount of guys on either side of the snapper each time, decreasing the distance the outside defender on the wide side had to run to block the ball flight of the kick. Also, you should never get one of your protection guys bowled over like we did on field goal because they should always be the low man. The staff knowledge on special teams has always been a known weakness.

Can't argue with coach's knack for winning and we'll certainly all take a W over an L with a return TD or block. I do really wish we would use DB's or WR's for returns like Ford used to. AW obviously meets that criteria and has done really well at PR. Not a fan of RB's at KR. Would love to see a Nate Wiggins type blazer there.

But again. Gimme the wins which coach does.
