Special Teams .........

Aiden Swanson was probably delighted when the media wanted to talk about the two blocked field goals rather than the 15' high 30 yard long returnable line drives he booted last night. Not sure whose fault the blocked kicks were, but pretty easy to know who was responsible for the punts. I do not recall a single punt that turned the field position in our favor. He punted pretty decently last year, but he sure seems to have regressed. Maybe the Australian style of kicking just doesn't work for him ...... or us.

Swanson's regression this year has blown my mind.
Last season, I would argue he single handedly won us one or two games b/c he consistently flipped the field and would pin opponents inside the 20.
He is a shadow of the punter he was last year in his 6th season.

I was going to post something similar. Special teams have been terrible. Not just the blocked kicks but the field position results from our special teams have really hurt. Without researching it, I am going to guess our average starting field position last night was somewhere between our 20 and 25 yard line. I’m guessing Louisville’s was somewhere in the 40s. For several years now, opposing teams routinely pin us inside our 10 yard line and we rarely do the same with our punting unit. Add in a couple of blocked field goals and we are giving away a huge field position advantage. I saw that this is only the second time in Dabo’s tenure that we have rushed for over 200 yards and passed for over 200 and lost. If you have an average starting position of roughly 20 yards worse than your opponent, over 10 possessions, you would need to have 200 more total yards than your opponent to offset that difference. Nothing like starting in a hole.

And, when it’s late in the game and we have them backed up we don’t even try to block a punt. We set up for a return, and guess what, we call for a fair catch. No situational awareness by the coaches or players.

Very good point. A blocked field goal is as close to a turnover as you can get. Those two blocks changed the game. Make the kicks, and the last Clemson drive is for the win.

And then throw in the 4th and 1 we didn't get on our 30 yard line. We motioned AW across the formation and the DB that was covering him shot the B gap and got in the back field and was holding onto Mafah's leg to buy time for another guy to get there.

Actually make them both and we probably win. First one was a 10 point swing to half time. Make the second and it is 13 point difference which means we would win by 1

Is the one that can be corrected the quickest. Much like the portal, the seeming neglect of this facet is putting our team in holes that they can no longer overcome through talent nor play making.

Not only the blocked FGs and lousy punting. We never try to block punts and never have any downfield blocking for Antonio on punt returns. Did we ever return a kickoff past the 20 last night. Every aspect of special teams is embarrassing.

Exactly right. It seems like Dabo thinks punt returns are not important and just wants to make sure we field the ball and don't risk fumbling on a punt return. A number of times this year we have fair caught a punt when there was plenty of time to return it. Special teams play just seems way too conservative.
