I'm thinking Spurrier. Heisman winner and outstanding coach. Anybody else come to mind?

Dabo was not a great player.

Saban is No. 1 followed by Bear Bryant...

Saban played at Kent State from 1970 to 1972 while Bear Bryant played at Alabama from 1933 to 1935.

I believe that Saban, because of his size, was actually the 2nd string football. He was known as a tough little ball with a tight spiral

Ken Hatfield was very good as a player and good as a coach.

Heisman might be in the mix back when there actually had player coaches at Brown/Penn.

Grundy might be there. Did not win it but he was snubbed for the LSU/Bama rematch BCS game. Golly, that BCS choice still irks me.

Pat Fitzgerald if he was coaching anywhere else than NW he might have a shot for the coaching aspect.

FBS didn't exist when Spurrier was a player***

Harbaugh comes to mind, crazy as all get out but had success at the highest level in both facets.

Not college coach, but Jimmy Johnson comes to mind. All Southwest Conference and a national title as a player at Arkansas, plus his stint winning two NFL championships as coach of the Cowboys. Not too shabby even though no college coaching involved.

plus he went to high school with Janis Joplin.

He won at the U as head coach before heading to NFL***
