Sitting here reminiscing on the good ole days

[2]
Jan 18, 2022, 9:03 AM

When Clemson basketball was fun.

I very much prefer seasons where we only beat 2 NCAA tourney teams in the regular season, beat 1 ranked team (in ACC tourney), lose in the ACC championship game, take a few really bad losses, and lose in the first round of the NCAA tourney as a 5 seed.

Please take me back to the glory days!!!

Kidding aside, I would certainly take that season over this one. I would also be fine if brownell was fired after the season. But let's not pretend that OPs results would be acceptable to you nowadays. The standards for Clemson basketball have significantly increased since purnell. (They should have, but not by this amount)

There have many good old days but of course none bigger than the scandal ridden days of Tates Locke. Our teams were awesome but that was back in the days when only the ACC Tournament Champion went to the tournament. We were so good in the paint in the Foster, Ellis and Purnell days and because we have not had an inside game we have struggled the last 10-12 years or so. Recruiting is the problem but of course the coach recruits who he can get.

the old Fike Field House, packed to the brim, feet-stomping and noise-deafening where we saw the likes of the Mahaffey boys, Butch Zatazelo, Jim Sutherland et al.

It was typically standing room only with students, professors and staff lined up early to get the best seats. We might not have had the greatest teams, but the games were fun. When LJ opened in December 1968, my senior year, we thought we had really graduated up to the big time, and it was quite an experience attending games there.

That's what we need again at Clemson, and the surefire way to begin seeing it is best summed in a three letter word: W-I-N. Winning will fill the seats.

Don't believe it? The Carolina Women's Basketball Team averages...AVERAGES over 13,000 attendance for home games. 13,000! How? They have one he1l of a coach who knows how to W-I-N. And Dawn Staley has the staff who knows how to recruit, based on what? Their ability to win!

to several "Tartan" surfaced courts for intramural action by the time I reached Clemson in 1972.

My only lasting memory of Fike is this: Big Benny Cunningham could seriously dunk a basketball, and you didn't want to be close to him when he did it. The ball could impale you after it went through the rim.

My dad told me a story about a guy on his intramural team taking a charge on Benny Cunningham. Said he had never seen somebody hit so hard. Haha.

I spent a LOT of time playing bball in Fike. Even refereed intramural ball for a couple of years to make some beer money. My best memories of Fike were playing with several of the football players in the early 80s. The Fridge could stand flat footed and jump straight up and dunk repeatedly. Terry Kinard was as good of a basketball player as he was a football player. Great memories.

something special places to see a game. With an auditorium stage under one basket and bleachers so close to the court's out-of-bounds you could pull the leg hairs off the visitors when they were throwing an inbounds pass. It was a great tactic the students used to screw with them.

As kids growing up in Clemson, we use to sneak into the game through the windows on the side of the building. On Sunday afternoon we would head down to Fike to shoot hoops. If it was locked, back to the window entrance. One time Frank Howard heard us in the gym and ran us out. He always threatened to tell our dads, everybody knew everybody in Clemson, so it was hard to get away with stuff.

We’ve been to games when Purnell was coach and have been to Brownlee games and they’re night and day. You can cherry pick numbers and make up facts like you just did, but at the end of the day, you can’t take away what we’ve seen with our own eyes.

Exactly. This is the point they don’t understand.

Rambling on about some stats isn’t going to convince me that my eyes are wrong.

What other stats would you include so they wouldn't be cherry picked? The year I described was Purnell's best year. It wasn't that great. We literally beat 3 NCAA tourney teams that year, had 1 ranked win, and lost in the first round of the tourney as a 5 seed.

I'm glad you had more fun watching Purnell teams, despite them not having as much success as we have had over the last 4 years. Your fragile emotions are not more important than actual on the court results. Sorry to break it to you.

flag link

Again. We don’t need stats.

Jan 18, 2022, 11:32 AM

Stats can be useful for some things, but they are not what attract fans.

When you’re comparing two programs that both have results that are average at best…
The one that was more exciting is the better one.
Not the one that may have had a .004% better winning percentage…or whatever. No one cares

Comparing brownells last 4 years and Purnell's it isn't really close.

Brownell won more and did it against better competition. He had over double the amount of ranked wins, went to the sweet 16, and beat UNC at home. I know it pains you to admit it, but brownell's last 4 years are more successful than Purnell's.

I'm tired of people hating on brownell and bragging about Purnell. Both have been very average in the grand scheme. You like a sloppy, helter skelter type game plan. Nothing wrong with that. I'm glad Purnell's team's entertained you more. I personally am more entertained by bigger wins, but it's not for everybody.

flag link

Purnell was certainly no stranger to blowing big leads!

Jan 18, 2022, 11:54 AM

The crushing loss to Villanova in the NCAA tourney comes to mind.

I can also remember a home loss to Virginia when we led by 13 in the second half.

There were others.

I certainly enjoyed the high points of the Purnell years and there were quite a few, but in the end analysis his tenure was just more of the same for Clemson.

Average overall and below average in the ACC.

flag link

disagree....

Jan 18, 2022, 12:07 PM

for the last four years OP had the third best record in the ACC after UNC and Duke.

3 straight losses in the NCAA is not hard to do. A lot of good coaches who went in the Hall of Fame have lost 3 straight before. That 12th seeded Vilanova was one of the best 12th seeds to get in the NCAAT. Any Brownell team would have lost to them. the Tigers really got screwed in that seeding...

flag link

Re: disagree....

Jan 18, 2022, 12:26 PM

Yeah and brownell's teams have finished 5th in the ACC over the last 5 years. The ACC was worse in OPs stretch than brownell's according to the sports reference website. Also there are more teams in the ACC now.

Statements like this below are ridiculous and just show how biased you are

"Any Brownell team would have lost to them."

flag link

The seeding notwithstanding, they had that game

Jan 18, 2022, 12:48 PM

well in hand in the second half and managed to fritter away a substantial lead resulting in a loss.

The frenetic offensive style Purnell coached was not effective when shots stopped falling because a missed shot almost always resulted in an easy transition basket for the other team.

As I said, I enjoyed watching Purnell’s teams play. There were some really great wins.

I wish he hadn’t quit on Clemson in the middle of the night.

flag link

The biggest takeaway from that stat is that the ACC

Jan 18, 2022, 4:34 PM

wasn't very good then.

People like to rag on ACC basketball this year, but Purnell benefited greatly from some down years in the ACC.

As others have mentioned, Brad's last four years are superior to Purnell's last four years, both in the quality of our wins as well as the caliber of our schedule.

That team took #1 UNC to overtime one two occasions, and one of the times the officiating was laughable. Made it to the ACC championship after beating Duke, and won 24 games back when that meant something in the ACC. We got an unfavorable matchup with Villanova in the tournament, but to say that season wasn’t better than this year is just kind of silly.

Purnell took over a program in the dumps and made games fun to go to, and Brownlee took a perennial tournament team that was fun to watch and took us into the cellar of the league, struggling to stay in the top 100 nationally. Those are just facts that everyone but you can see.

OMG, WE TOOK UNC TO OVERTIME AND LOST 2 TIMES???? Wow, that's incredible. The last I checked, a loss is a loss. I'm glad you were entertained in our losing effort though. You also
realize the ACC only had 3 tourney teams that year right? The ACC this year may be better than the ACC that year. So your logic (per usual) doesn't pan out. I do remember that time we beat #3 Duke, #5 Louisville, and #6 FSU all in the same year. Do you remember that?

I specifically stated I the OP that I would obviously take that team over this years team, because I knew dolts like you would be dramatic and ridiculous. Guess it still didn't work for you.

Lastly, over the last 5 years, we have been 5th in the ACC in wins/losses so we aren't close to the cellar. Once again you are completely inaccurate.

Jan 18, 2022, 1:36 PM

Football that we aren’t elite and can only be judged on this year. So that’s what I’m doing. We are in the cellar.

We’ve been to the tournament 3 times in 12 years and are headed in the wrong direction after taking over from a coach who went to 3 tournaments in 3 years. And was fun to watch.

And taking the #1 team to double OT and OT in two matchups with them is pretty cool. No matter what you say.

Jesus the stupidity is increasing.

I've never said our football program was not elite. Please provide proof of this if you are going g to throw around ridiculous accusations.

You tell me I cherry pick stats and then you give me no statistics to add. And then you write this gem of a statement. Do you not realize how biased/delusional you are? Brownell has gone to the tourney 3 out of 12 years. Purnell went to the tourney 3 out of 3 years. Do you understand how this isn't logical?

I'm glad you are proud of those two moral victories. Those are 2 of OP's greatest accomplishments while he was here at Clemson.

They don't want numbers, or data, or logic of any kind. They just care about what they perceive, or want to perceive, and equate that to facts.

And if that weren't dangerous enough, they also expect the rest of us to agree with their "facts" and if we don't, we are the problem.

Some amazing logic there, huh?
