Imagine him catching passes out of the backfield this year. Would have been huge compliment to an improved offense.

Similar to the Ravens, their QB eats a little into the # of touches for all their RBs

I agree he would have helped this year. I’m not sure he would have been any more prepared for the NFL with another year of college.

Some of these replies feel like revisionist history. People were ecstatic that Shipley was leaving because he got tackled by the turf monster every game.
Folks were begging for mafah to start.

He is also a kick returner and has looked good there with at least one good return.

Mafah was and is the better running back. Mafah, healthy, is violent. If Shipley stays, Mafah would have been gone, and even with the injury, we got the better deal out of the two.

Barkley is the top rusher in the NFL and Shipley is stuck playing behind him.

the Georgia or Louisville games. SC was close enough that having a competent and healthy RB may have been the difference. It would certainly be nice to have him right now for the Texas game.

A lot of Heisman winners don't make it in the NFL.

Shipley had a great 3-year career at Clemson, averaging 5.0 yds per carry, catching 85 passes, and scoring 33 TDs, with quite a few long runs. Some message board "fans" just don't like him. Last time I checked, he is still on an NFL roster, and is stuck behind one of the best RBs in the NFL. Zero shame in that.

Isn’t Shipley third team running back? He’s gonna have to go somewhere else to get a shot.

I think they mainly use him as a kickoff returner. Hard to get many carries

This is all delusional revisionist history. Mafah was a much better running back than Shipley, who was slower and weaker. Most of us were very frustrated that the coaches took so long to start Mafah. Shipley was a very impressive athlete, and a bigger receiving threat, but that hasn't really been the missing piece we've needed. He also was a fumble machine and was pretty bad at pass blocking.
I think Shipley was better than Haynes is, at least at this point, because he added that new wrinkle. But we were absolutely pulverized by UGA and Louisville. UGA had 2 1/2 times more yards than we did. Louisville was up 26-7 with double our yards when they put in their backups in the fourth quarter. I'm not sure Ashton Jeanty could have helped us win those games, let alone someone who'd already lost their starting position.
I do think it's entirely plausible he could have been a much bigger help against South Carolina (though he was also a potential liability). That one is arguable at least.
And another year wasn't going to help Shipley do better in the NFL. Running back isn't like some other positions where working on fundamentals can make a huge difference. He made an active roster, but no amount of preparation is going to make him an NFL star or help him surpass Saquon Barkley. That's just pure genetics.

This!
A lot of people last year were clamoring for Mafah and wanted Shipley benched……
With RB unless you have that rare 1st round, all-world guy like Travis , Jeanty, or Derrick Henry you need a solid RB rotation.
It is one position where depth is super important. Mafah and Shipley certainly don’t suck, they are good running backs but they aren’t equipped to carry the load, every game for 20+ carries all season long. Wear and tear just got to Mafah and Shipley also had a history of injuries if you remember…it is sadly inevitable at that position aside from a rare few.
If anything is to blame it is the lack of load management this season…Phil, Haynes, and maybe Adams should have been sharing carries all year!
