These guys don’t enter the portal until they’ve already agreed to the Alabama buyout. It’s not like Saban goes, oh, look, this looks like a good one, let’s pick him up out of the portal.

If that’s the way it works, then we can’t compete. No coordinated NIL and we’re done.
I don’t see how the portal should be any different for recruiting. Saban comes knocking (before being in the portal or not), good chance he gets the guy. Especially when says we a starting spot for you.
Dabo is a great recruiter but he don’t use the portal. The portal can’t be a one way street if we expect to compete for the playoffs every year. Replacing deserters with family members of the the Clemson staff isn’t going to cut it.

There is probably some back channel communications, generally instigated by the player, that goes on. Saban and staff aren't talking to anybody until the player enters the portal. That would be a serious violation and though the NCAA would probably turn a blind eye the affected teams would be screaming.
