Running talk

Sep 27, 2021, 9:07 PM

I’ve mentioned before going to Orange Theory

Today was a timed 1 mile benchmark run

6:48 mile for me today

The last one I did was in January clocking in at 9:30

I’m sure some of y’all can 6:48 miles for a 10k and what not, but let me enjoy my day!

Isn't it like $140/month for 8 classes or something?

Sep 27, 2021, 10:25 PM

I remember my wife mentioning it to me and I was like....$140...for one person...for 8 classes, Compared to the $80 YMCA membership we currently have for the entire family where you can take as many classes as you want for free.......

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Different rates and packages

Sep 28, 2021, 5:04 AM

I’m locked in at an older rate for unlimited classes

I’m at $6.75 per class so far this month

When I view it as cheaper than a lunch or happy hour and an actual good use of 1 hour and $6.75 it’s a no brainer

I don’t have the discipline to go to planet fitness at $10/ month and call it a day

Charleston. I looked into it and it is only $60 per week for a single person.

Gold's Gym is $68 for family membership per month with unlimited classes that are very similar to HIIT classes at F45.

I want to try Orange Theory but I don't want to dip too far into that #Equity. I'm also afraid I will like it alot because there is an element of competition in there that I crave.

2024 purple level memberringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I know some F45 coaches from bartending

Sep 28, 2021, 9:14 AM

And a few of the girls moved from OTF to F45. They were hesitant at first because it’s a little more chaos apparently.

There is definitely some competition and that’s actually why I pushed myself yesterday.

43:40 was time for the Dri Tri a couple of weeks ago. 2000 meter row, 300 body weight excercises (burpees, push-ups, etc) and a 5k. I didn’t place in my age group of 30-39, BUTTTTTTTTTTTT, the next one is in March. I turn 40 in February. I’ll be the youngest in the 40-49 group and my time from this one would have had me in first place. I was about a minute off of top 5 all around.

The first one is free, give it a chance with your nutz out and make Mrs Greenr feel the heat of the divorcees checking you out in 3 inch inseams.

Sep 27, 2021, 11:02 PM

especially down from 9 and a half.

I am not a runner - I make myself do it because I want to cheat old age a day or two longer - but I do 4 miles, 3 days a week, been doing it about 5 years. I'm probably doing about 10:00 per mile over that stretch. Nothing athletic, just getting exercise. My point is that at age 66, even with that history, if I did a one mile test I'm not sure I could get to 8, balls out. I wouldn't put money on it. Anyway, seriously impressed with 6:40. Good job, man.

Sep 28, 2021, 7:43 AM

I'd say that is a very good time for 66 too! I think about running again but I just can't seem to get it done. It my be the extra 60 pounds that genetics was finally able to throw on my back (stomach) that keeps me in the chair... still trying to figure it out though. I'm sure once I do then I'll be able to dedicate some time working on how to solve that problem too. Got to take easy as I am getting older! :)

Sep 28, 2021, 3:39 PM

10:00 pace, barely made it to the 2, stumbled to the end. A few months later, added a couple tenths or so. And so forth. The point is that adding the distance has been simply a matter of consistency. Decreasing time is another matter altogether, something I am nowhere near trying. My comment wasn't about me, but his 6:40, which i think is incredible. Was just describing why it seems unreachable to me.

Greenr's fastest 5k was 20:07 (and it measured long (TWSS)) but I cannot replicate that these days.

2024 purple level memberringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's actually surprising.

Sep 28, 2021, 8:39 AM

You being a big runner and all. I definitely can't break 20, but I'm just basing it on my son, who's not a good runner at all and did mostly XC, getting in the upper 18's when he does them. It's funny how different the various disciplines of running translate to who can do what with what body type.

On a tangent, cross country times blow my mind. We have a friend whose son was a killer cross country runner in high school....he broke a few state records along the way and consistently got into the 15's on the 3.1 mile courses---that's blazing. Wanted to run at Clemson but they wouldn't give him a whiff.....apparently they were focusing on people in the 14's with very low 15's being the cutoff.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would imagine your son has 40 less pounds than me

Sep 28, 2021, 8:58 AM

and I didn't start running until I was 30ish.

At first I wanted to focus on the 5k and get my times down but kept opting for distance running instead. Now I am too heavy and too old to get under 20 minutes. At least that is what I am telling myself.

CC times are stupid. I have friends whose kids are getting into it and they are running 20 minute 5ks at 12-13 years old.

2024 purple level memberringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ha ha. My fastest 5k is faster

Sep 28, 2021, 11:05 AM [ in reply to That is smokin', man. That is getting close to breaking a ]

19:12. But I trained specifically for it (with a coach and everything) and it was a mostly downhill course. And there's no way I could do that now if I wanted to.

Either way, that 20 is fast.

And for @fluffhead a sub-7 mile is fast. Don't let the ####### runners who run in the 5-minute pace tell you otherwise

Re: Running talk

Sep 28, 2021, 7:57 AM

If you ignore the time and just look at your overall athletic improvement that's an amazing 8/9 month jump. Well done!

Also sub 7 miles are pretty legit. Don't let anyone tell you anything else as the percentage of runners who can do that is quite small. Keep up the great work!

I need to get back to it w the cool weather coming. Been rucking on the treadmill.

Any particular plan that you went with? I’m at about a 9:30 due to not running

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Over the course of things I’ve been consistently increasing

Sep 28, 2021, 9:32 AM

My base pace.

(I’m not a CrossFit, look at me workouter. I enjoy OTF and this is the system that they use. I don’t care if it’s right or wrong for people, it has worked for me)

There are 3 speeds at OTF
Base (regular jog)
Push (challenging but doable)
All Out (sprint)

I’ve increased my base from 5 mph to 6.7 mph
Push has therefore gone up from 6 to 7.7
All out I can do 12 mph for 30 seconds, but definitely not a full minute

Each workout on treads focuses on endurance, strength and power
Think distance, inclines and speeds

I started at 8.5 and gradually increased to 10 mph in the last .5 and sprinted the last .2 or so at 11 mph

All of that being said, slowly make increases. I quit trying to make the sprints and focused more on the base and push. It’s harder for me to get my heart rate up at those speeds and I continue to increase accordingly. The difference for me in this vs Gold’s or something else is that I have a coach that is trying to push me. She laughed at my 6.5 base and said, here you are 6.7 don’t back down from there. (In a good way, not aggressive at all)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My fastest mile is 7:20.

Sep 28, 2021, 10:10 AM

But I've never ran a mile for time.

once she gets cleared. she was doing something similar in ATL...seems those hoity toity type places are all the buzz in the upper middle class, basic #####, white girl areas.

got a buddy who swears by the orange theory approach. w/ kids and what not, says it's much easier to just show up, do a class, and leave as opposed to mapping out the workout at a gym, waiting on ####, etc. etc.

I think I can buy the approach, but i'm too cheap to pay for it.

good shid on the running time. that's pretty #### impressive man

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sep 28, 2021, 12:02 PM

I wouldn’t do it at all (as proven over the last 6 yrs) if it weren’t for the ease of planning

I mentioned it earlier, it works for me, it may not be best for others and I ain’t trying to push it on anybody or flaunt, well a little humblebrag
