Returning Starters on Offense

Sep 20, 2021, 10:24 AM

Just did a quick check and we have 3 guys on offense who started every game last year at their current position. Three. Essentially, we have a totally new offense - almost as though we have no returners. We have O-linemen playing positions they've never or seldom played before and a quarterback with few of the targets he had last year and missing the key player in his backfield. None of these pieces have worked together before. Elliot is basically starting from scratch to see what works and what doesn't. It doesn't help when your QB is admittedly not playing up to his potential - due in part to the new dynamics of this team, and in part to his own confidence. And it doesn't help having Lynn-J in the doghouse so far, either. We also have a new RB coach who has never coached before - not knocking CJ, who's awesome, but being a great player does not necessarily equal being a great coach, and coaches have learning curves just like players. It takes time, and trial and error.

We lost a LOT of key players on offense after last year. This next game at NCS will be significant. There should be no 2 hour weather delays. We may still not play light-out, but hopefully we will start to see some progress on offense, and that's all we need. Progress. I can handle sloppy wins as long as we're ultimately improving each week. So far that improvement has been negligible, if that, but hopefully we'll start to see more this weekend.

I count only 2 at the same position

All these guys playing or the majority have seen plenty of playing time in their time here, just because they didn't start doesn't mean they didn't see action and know what's going on. The offense didn't even look good against S.C. ST, we just happen to be bigger and stronger then them to run them over. The playbook just needs to open up and see what happens, cause its pretty clear nothing is going to happen like it is now.

Totally agree...perhaps the most significant losses are

TL, ETN and Amari Rodgers. As mentioned we need to see significant improvement if we have any chance of making the CFP. Hopefully we'll see that this weekend.

Don't forget Powell

his emergence last year was key to the offense hitting it's stride

I don’t see many unanticipated losses from last year.

Sep 20, 2021, 10:35 AM

We knew we were going to lose Lawrence, Etienne, Rodgers, etc. We always talk about building depth by playing backups a lot. We had plenty of opportunity to do that last year in many games, so I don’t have much sympathy for our team on this one.

It would be one thing if we had many players surprisingly turn pro early, or transfer, or sustain severe injuries. But that didn’t happen.

This is roster management 101, and it is shocking that these (very talented) guys aren’t ready.

They haven't looked ready...

and some of that can be attributed to coaching/play calling.

However, A LOT of it has been self inflicted (penalties, dropped balls, missing open receivers, and turnovers).

Thankfully, A LOT of this is entirely correctable. We just all need and want to see it on the field.

I'll be honest, that's a legitimate point you're making but it's not the main reason our offense is terrible. It's a contributing factor.

Clemson's offense reminds me of FSU's right around the time they started to tank. If you remember, FSU's OL had been bad for a few years, and then it got worse. By the time they played Alabama (2 yr.'s ago?) their OL was so bad they couldn't block a good HS team.

Clemson's offensive woes have more to do with coaching, and scheme than anything else IMOP. The talent is there, but for whatever reason none of the position groups outside of RB look good. The OL is a disaster because of coaching, plain and simple. Excuses have been made for the OL for the last 10 years, but the OL is always the weak-link and the last 2 years it's reached critical mass. Also, our offensive scheme and play calling look stale. Our QB is struggling, and the rest of the offense (coaches included) haven't helped him out much during games.

That's a recipe for disaster, and I suspect changes will be made at the end of this season. 2021 is gonna be a bumpy ride.

...that's the first I've heard of it.

Go ahead and ask them though, seems like a fair question. :)

With the exception of Shipley...

Sep 20, 2021, 11:05 AM [ in reply to So if our RB's look good ]

Our RB group hasn't looked that good either. But I think the biggest criticism of CJ has been the Dixon issue. None of us no exactly what is/has happened there and Dabo's handling of it in the media has not helped matters.

Every group on the offensive side of the ball has issues and there has been little improvement from game 1 to game 3. And frankly some of the stuff our coaching staff has said over the past couple of days doesn't give me any hope that it will improve.

I didn't trash him. Just saying he's a first year coach, and first year anything has growing pains. I'm sure he'll do a great job as he gets more and more experience. But having been a great player does not mean he'll automatically be a great coach. It will take some time - trial and error, game after game.
