Quick thoughts on the game.

First, Cade needed to be more decisive, and the WRs needed to separate. When both of those things happen, we appear like the old Tigers. What a difference talent at WR makes.
Gunn does not have the leg on kickoffs, and we need him to boot it. I hope this doesn't bite us in the butt this year.
They seemed to be picking on Lewis, who dropped a possible pick-six and missed some tackles.
Coaches see that our other backups at LB aren't cutting it and taking their chances with the freshman Brown. I think this is the right move, but it will take him some time. He looked a little shaky out there, but probably the best we got after the starters. I am just glad that McCloud is not getting more snaps.
Denhoff is not good at all, and we lack depth at DE. Should have portaled there.
Mafa's speed continues to amaze me. Brinny is one of the best TEs in college football.
I am not going to get overly excited with just one game against a non-power 5 team, but Wesco is the real deal Holyfield and just what we needed.

Mafah should be a mid round draft pick or better

with his size and decent speed.
Question though, hasn't all but one of our kickoffs in the first 2 games gone into the endzone?

There were two in the first quarter that were not even close.***

And they are almost always in the endzone. He was probably told not to kick it in the endzone, and it was also blowing against him in the 1Q.

Wondered what was going on. Is he nursing an injury or does he have a dead leg. Would like to hear from Dabo on this. It was very odd.

Yes, I think Wesco is going to be a star. To add, Mafah not only has speed, but can pound through the line like a workhorse. Great to see it all coming together last night.

I think was intentionally not kicking it deep. IMHO the coaches wanted to practice kick coverage. He has the leg to kick into end zone consistently.

I tend to agree. The coaches may have wanted to test the special teams on kickoffs.

The kickoffs not going into the end zone are intentional. Why automatically give the opponent the ball on the 25 yard line? A lot of kickoff returns don’t make it out to the 25 and many times the returning team is penalized during the return putting the returning team in poor field position. It is also an opportunity for a turnover. The returner for App St misjudged one kick last night and almost left the live ball on the 5 yard line for us to recover. When he did fall on the ball their starting field position was around the 5 yard line. A lot of bad things happen on kickoff returns.
Kobe McCloud was injured last night or you would have seen a lot more of him. Brown did look a little overwhelmed but you can see he is an exceptional athlete. He will be great given some time to adjust. The coaches will k is when he’s ready.

You really dislike Cade huh? Must be bc he sent another pacific tiger packing. Or is it the name Cade bc you highlighted 2 Cades.
Agree with most of what you said. Wes Goodwin might need to explore going the 3 down front like BV had to do in 2019, utilize some of the athletes at OLB as pass rushers.
I think Drew Woodaz stood out to me with his burst. Carter is better on the blitz than in space, Wade Woodaz is better outside than inside.
Cade Denhoff was always going to be a depth guy. Need to see more out of Hoffler, think that kid can be solid.

Thought about this after posting. Don't have 2 quality ilb so 3 down set is a no go right now.
What weird position to be in. No natural edge guys outside Parker and no natural mike lbs that are ready.

They are notorious for being giant slayers. I see no one on their schedule which can resist their advancement to the playoff. As we move up and they start playing their conference schedule they will end up in the top 10 or a very respectable #12 or so.
It wouldn't surprise me if they were considered for the playoff.
