Question for Clemson Alumni

Jan 21, 2021, 4:04 PM

What other schools did you apply to and were you accepted. Were you accepted by your first choice?

Re: Question for Clemson Alumni

Clemson, UNC and Charlotte! Accepted into all 3, got to go to my first choice, and had a great 4 years as a 49er

(I kid about that last part, Go Tigers)

Attended Caltech (Astronomy) and Washington University in St. Louis (Physics) prior to transferring to Clemson (ECE). Was also accepted at Swarthmore, UC Berkeley, and the University of Arizona.

It was a long strange journey, but transferring to Clemson was one of the best decisions of my life.

Re: Question for Clemson Alumni

Jan 21, 2021, 4:24 PM

Lol, this will sound funny...

I was 2 days from moving to Knoxville and Clemson gave me a better offer (more money). No lie, my father was corporate McD's in the 80s/90s and I was a Happy Meal test kid... The next day I rented a car, drove down to Clemson and found an apartment.

Dodged a bullet there. Anyway, grad school is all about which programs are bother what you want as well as their financial packages. I liked Clemson but they were very slow sending out an assistantship package to me.

Undergrad: All instate public schools in Virginia - Those were my only choices my parent supported because I was paying. Accepted and attended my first choice.
Masters: Penn, Virginia Tech, UT, & Clemson. I would also apply to VCU because of a work offer but didn't really want that job long-term in RVa.
PhD: Clemson (and an invite from Georgia Tech - courtesy from my academic network). GT was a good offer but not a good fit for my scope as I had to rely on a program with a strong government, communication, and engineering focus.

I had the second highest score in S.C. on the Military Achievement test during my junior year of high school. I thought long and hard about going to the Naval Academy, but I wanted to stay close to home due to my father being ill.

After that, I only applied to Clemson, as I wanted to be a Civil Engineer. I enrolled as a freshman in 1977.

University of Australia at Sydney - had a nice ring to it - picked that one.

Re: Question for Clemson Alumni

Jan 21, 2021, 5:45 PM

I could've been wrong, but I've always thought that Clemson was the only school that everybody should apply for. So I didn't go to an academic college bc I wasn't smart enough to get into Clemson.

My wife and I were talking about our regrets during our life just a couple weeks ago, and my biggest by far was, not applying myself as well as I could have to had the opportunity to have enrolled in an academic school like Clemson.

I believe that I could have if, I would have done the best that I could've done in HS. And I say that bc, I got through HS, and I hardly ever opened a book after the school was out everyday, and I Truly regret not ever giving myself the opportunities that I know I could've had.

Thank you hoosicktiger, that statement means more than I could have ever expected. But I have been loyal to our Tigers. I was in memorial stadium for the very first FB game that I had ever saw, and it was Clemson VS Coots in 1962, Clemson won that day on November, 24th, it was my sisters B-day, and mine was 3 days later on the 27th. That game was a B-day gift to me from my best friend in school, his parents, and I have been a Tiger fan since that day, November, 24th 1962. And I have never, not once ever thought about being a fan to another team, not even when our Tigers were at our worst. I took the ribbing like a man bc I knew that one day, we would be one of the best. The Danny Ford days were great, but I believed even back then, better Clemson days would come, and they have, but, the best has yet to come!!!! It may sound corny to some, but I don't care, bc I know that I'm not alone, but I love Clemson, and Clemson sports, Go Tigerssss!!!!!!!

Furman, Clemson, Ga Tech. Back then, the top 2 SAT scores

Jan 21, 2021, 6:45 PM

in every high school in Greenville County was automatically a "Furman Scholar". (This was the mid 70s). You got an academic scholarship to Furman worth $1500 a year, I think that's right. But even with that, FU was still a good bit more expensive then CU, and I knew my mom couldn't afford it. I applied and was accepted at Ga Tech because the only person I ever knew who attended college was one of my best friend's dad, and he was a "wrambling wreck and a helluva engineer". But that out-of-state tuition was way beyond reach...

Jan 21, 2021, 10:34 PM [ in reply to Furman, Clemson, Ga Tech. Back then, the top 2 SAT scores ]

They must have expanded the Furman scholar program between the mid-70's and 1980. We had two girls and two boys from our class. I don't recall any scholarship money being mentioned, they just had some sort of tour and a chicken dinner in the dining hall. I did not apply there.

Georgia Tech also had a chicken dinner (but in a nicer setting). They included tickets to the GT-Navy football game, so that's where I was when Clemson beat Notre Dame in 1979. I received my GT acceptance months before Clemson so I had a heckuva backup school but had my heart set on Clemson and have never regretted it!

Clemson legacy...

Jan 22, 2021, 1:30 PM

Clemson was always my first choice ..,

Applied and accepted....Clemson, UVA, Duke, NCSU....

Growing up a Clemson kid I could never imagine going to another ACC school honestly though..

Duke has a weird process... you have an interview with an alum as part of the process...
It was pretty deep into the process before Duke realized I’d applied to an engineering discipline they didn’t have ... ChE... maybe they do now but didn’t then.., my interview was with a Duke grad attorney..her only knowledge of their engineering school centered around an engineering student she dated during under grad... haha

All the schools besides Clemson were on advisement of my high school guidance counselor.... I barely looked at the catalogue for Duke... just filled out the application materials...

I applied to Clemson, USC (I know, but had good program), and coastal. I was luckily accepted to all three and graduated from Clemson. Doing grad school online through ASU now

Clemson, Cornell and Lawrence Institute of Technology for Architecture. Clemson had me when I came down for my interview. Fell in love with the place!

Had wanted to attend CU since seeing first football game in 1959. Also had a cousin who graduated in early 50s. Was given his ROTC helmet. However finishing in the middle of a 550 student class in 1965 along with a marginal SAT nixed that. Focused on too many other things outside HS. Went to North G'ville and then the AF. Much better grades at NGJC and the veteran status evidently allowed me to get in. It was a long haul to get a CU degree.

My 1st choice was the only school I applied to. I was a life long Tiger fan but I love the beach. I was thinking with my little brain when I decided I’d go to Coastal Carolina, Worked as a lifeguard on the beach in the summers my whole life at that age revolved around my male thang.

My best friend did the same but he wanted to transfer to Clemson after the second year because his girlfriend was there. That when I woke up a little to the fact I was going to need a good education. I made College a way of life for quite a while...lol

Local boy. Dirt poor family. No funds to attend anywhere but Clemson. First in the family to attend college. Thankfully I was born within 10 minute commute of Clemson. Applied only to Clemson. Commuted from home and worked year around all 6 years getting 2 degrees. Very very blessed and very very proud that I beat the predicted GPR by more than 10%. Back then they put a prediction of GPR in your acceptance documents. I proved them wrong by graduating with honors. So thankful to be from here and to live here now.

Hampton, VA native. Grew up loving ACC basketball. Applied to Clemson, NCSU, UVA and Richmond a long time ago. Fortunately was not accepted to UVA. Loved Clemson and still do!

Grad school at Clemson.

All first choices, accepted by all 3 on the first try.

All Tiger schools!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I wanted to go to Clemson since I was in 2nd grade...

Jan 23, 2021, 11:14 PM

So I worked my ace off in school to make it happen. The day I got my acceptance letter was one of the happiest days of my life.

From Aiken, SC. USC-Aiken REALLY liked me and wanted me to stay home. For some reason the University of Tennessee showed a lot of interest in me which was flattering, I guess. They sent me a letter telling me I was accepted after my first SAT (which I was not happy with my initial results). I sent my SAT scores to Georgia Tech and Miami(FL). They sent me information on their schools and their out-of-state tuitions would have given my dad a heart attack. UPenn sent me a brochure which was cool considering that’s an Ivy League School.

But it was always gonna be Clemson. I’m very blessed to make my dream come true.

Clemson, Carolina and PC

Had money to to Carolina and PC

Carolina would have been chasing a girl, so double glad I didn’t do that

PC was just too small (my older sister went there)

CU class of 2004, feels like yesterday and feels like a Illini years ago

Clemson and Washington & Lee

Jan 24, 2021, 11:14 AM

Got accepted to both, but growing up the son of '55 Clemson alum, my mind was pretty much made up for me. The running joke was that I could go anywhere I wanted, but the tuition would be going to Clemson. :D

I applied to W&L for my Mom, and we visited, and I even got a call from the baseball coach who encouraged me to try out for the team should I decide to enroll. (No scholarships at D III schools, at the time, and I think now also.) But I was completely all in for Clemson. W&L may have been a better fit for me, actually, now that I look back with some degree of objectivity, but I do not regret my four years at Clemson. At all.

I only sent an application to Clemson. I had my SATs sent to Georgia Tech and Furman because you could send your SATs to up to three schools for the base price. This was in 1989.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

None. Just Clemson.

Jan 24, 2021, 11:31 AM

I only wanted to go to Clemson. Got accepted early so I didn't apply anywhere else. If I had it would've been Wofford, UNC & Georgia. As a backup I would've applied to Anderson and transferred to Clemson.

Clemson, UNC, App State. Was accepted by all 3. Chose the Tigers for price reason. I will always be glad i made that choice.

GT, UNC, USC and NCSU

UNC was out because I wanted engineering
NCSU was out because the campus was all red bricks (and I grew up a Tar Heel fan)
GT was out because it was twice the distance from Charlotte than Clemson was.
USC was out because it was USC

Soooo, I'm a Tiger!
