Practice Recap. 03/27/23

26

Mar 27, 2023, 6:46 PM

Tried to write down things of note during practice

Notable Moments -

After the team was done stretching Dabo came and spent 20 minutes talking to our 5 coaches - don’t think ANY other coach in the country would do that.

Dabo shared that he thinks Cole Turner will be one of the best to ever go through Clemson - said Deandre Hopkins good

Said he hopes to redshirt 17 (Vinizzia) - said he’s going to be really good. - I didn’t realize he’s only 17 years old!!

When talking about the Mid Years he lit up. Those guys are going to be special.

Practice Observations.

In tempo to start practice Cade threw a puck to trotter, but after that looked really good. He’s got a good command of the offense.

Paul Tyson may never play a snap at QB but he is a massive and thick man

The offense used the TE’s and RB’s often in the passing game.
Jake Brinningstool looked like a Grown man.

Attacked the middle of the field way more than in the past.

Noble Johnson is thicker than I expected, he’s going to be real good.

Antonio williams looked quicker and more explosive.

The linebackers (Carter and Trotter continue to look better)

I could go on and on but it was a great day.
The team moves fast on offense and there seemed to be a purpose in the play calling.

Excited for the 15th!

Go tigers.

Throwing to the middle of the field??? Is that legal?

Don’t kid me like this now. Passing to the middle of the field is so difficult to defend and has been missing for too long. I want that to be the first play of the spring ball game.

Remembering the former QB and how everyone said he was inaccurate, not very good, etc...

If he was really bad (I'm not making a judgment, just a what if)

I know something about being a bad quarterback because I am one. So maybe it's just as a P.E. teacher or family Thanksgiving day game QB, but I can't make every throw and you can forget about a ball traveling more than 30 yards accurately on my very best day. I hardly ever threw to a go route receiver, but I could take my team down the field for a touchdown almost every time with crossing routes and hook routes. I'm not fast, don't scramble well, don't have a ton of arm strength, etc. Other guys will always look better in warm-ups. I re-emphasize that I am nowhere near a college level QB. But I move the ball safely and without turnovers and get six points off throws to the middle of the field.

If he was really that bad, why didn't we give him easy throws that were also productive? Bubble screens were mostly easy throws, but if the defense knows you'll do it, they have guys waiting which makes the play unproductive.

It still blows my mind to think how we didn't use slot receivers slanting across the middle more. Safety valve. Easy 5-7 yards. We were gaining five yards per rush with Shipley. Two positive plays and it's a first down. Why couldn't we do that one simple thing?

My guess is fear of interceptions due to his propensity to overthrow WRs. Safeties just sitting behind plays waiting to take one the other way.

It wasn’t all in the middle of the field
It was spread around the whole field.

A great variety between screens, short routes underneath and outside the hashes, midlevel, and down field

One bad nugget is on par with what we’ve heard all spring.
The kicking hasn’t been great. The punting in particular was not the smoothest period.

Helms or Tyson as QB2 ??

3

Mar 27, 2023, 9:24 PM

If Vizzinia redshirts as I would think likely, who earns the backup? Helms has the Clemson experience, but with the new offense being installed, it should be a great battle with Tyson.

Helms was running out with the second group.
He looked far better than I anticipated.

Seemed like a serviceable backup today

I wonder why Tyson would want to transfer to CU to sit the bench, and possibly not even earn the 2nd string job.

I don't expect CV to redshirt.

He wants to be a coach.
Taking the same path Hunter Johnson did.

Was coming in to say the same thing.

And, whether we like it or not, he would likely end up coaching here, at least to start. We see it up and down. Is Tajh still helping?

Thanks for the report. Did you see any particular part of the new scheme to use with your guys?

A lot of good RPO plays out of certain formations.

There was a play action pass to Brinningstool in the middle of the field wideeee that he took 30 yards for a TD.

Definitely some good stuff out there.

Riley's got Cade throwing hockey pucks?

At least we know Trotter can catch those things.
