Penn State guy here and I come in peace

First off, I do want to say we’re all talking about the shake up going on in college football as well. With that being said lots of talks about Kansas wanting to jump and join the Big 10. I’ve read a lot of post on this site and for what I can tell you it’s very unlikely that Penn State would leave for the ACC. I agree it wouldn’t make any sense and that’s not me coming off as criticizing the ACC by no means but it’s all about the money now a days and the Big 10 makes a larger amount of money in revenue. So the reason why I came to this board is to get you guys opinions on would Clemson ever try and join the Big 10? Maybe a so called trade of teams between the Big 10 and ACC?
If Clemson and others like NC, Duke, FL State, and/or even Norte Dame joined our conference would be an outstanding conference in Football, basketball, all other sports, and rich traditions. Again by no means do I come into this site with criticism of the ACC but the idea of coming together and making the most entertaining and rich filled tradition conference on the map.
If you really want my 2 cents I’m a big “if it’s not broke don’t fix it” type of guy and the plays offs to me suck and has changed a lot. I do miss the days of waking up in December to having an entertaining, hard fought bowl game leading into January BCS bowl/NC. Texas A&M running away from Texas and Missouri leaving for the SEC was total crap.
Again would love to hear your opinions on a possible Clemson/Big 10 addition or even a ACC/Big 10 realignment. I highly doubt any of this would even happen with how much tradition the Big 10 and ACC have but it would be pretty great for both teams. Thank you!

Question for Penn State guy

Hello, Penn State guy! Unless the Big 10 drops the AAU membership requirement, the only ACC schools that qualify for membership are Duke, GT, UNC, and UVA. Is there any chance that requirement will ever be dropped? I know that Nebraska is not an AAU school, but they were when they applied for Big 10 membership.

I'm with you. Big 10 $$$$ speaks volumes. The ACC is the loser here.

I think a realigment with the Big 10 would be awesome. We both can get rid of the schools with little to offer (GA Tech, Wake Forest, Illinois, etc) and can realign into something more powerful than the SEC/Big 12

Clemson has shown that the money the ACC pays out is sufficient to win the national championship and consistently make the playoffs.

First I want to say I'm in huge favor of the ACC asking Penn State to join. Do I believe Penn St would? Probably not, but you know The old saying.....it never hurts to ask. But the ACC desperately needs more beef in football, and adding UCF or Cincinnati simply would be adding white meat, not beef. As far as Clemson joining the Big Ten? Well geographically it makes zero sense...but neither does a mid west team in the sec. But I do like the challenges and the competition in the Big Ten better than I do the ACC. My biggest problem with the big 10 is their name. Big Ten? They haven't had just ten teams since Penn St joined thirty years ago. Honestly, they need a new name, and please not BIG. That's even worse. But I like the idea of playing Ohio State every year and Michigan. And Penn State I think those will be awesome games. Much more peeling than playing Wake Forest or Duke.

Agreed with the bottom section of your post. I haven’t cared for the name Big 10 being changed but it doesn’t make any sense. If a realignment happened I would be all for a conference renaming. But most conferences do not make any sense. SEC is not and will not be (when OK and Texas join) a south east conference. Yes it would bring some great competition in football through out the regular season and basketball would be so incredible to watch.

The only way Clemson would ever leave the ACC is if the ACC somehow imploded from other schools leaving and the writing was on the wall that you needed to "get while the getting was good." Besides, we've beaten most of the Big 10 anyway - Illinois, Maryland, Nebraska, Ohio St, and Penn St, at least. I may be missing one or two! ;)

I do like the way basketball does the conference challenges, though. I think it would be really cool if we had an ACC/Big 10 challenge in football, where in one week, we played each other. I hate that we and the other Power 5 teams play all these minor schools. I get why we do it, and nothing will probably ever change, but if Clemson played an SEC school (2, actually, since we play SC every year) and a Big 10 school in one season, that would make for a great schedule. I'd love to see us play Michigan, for example, or Penn St. It'd be good for schools to get into those other markets for at least one weekend. I'd love to see it, but probably won't ever happen.

Thanks for coming here to share your thoughts.

Most of us here would love to have Penn State in the ACC. Adding the Nittany Lions has been discussed here for quite some time.

I don't think most of us here are interested in joining the Big 10 or any other conference unless it becomes necessary for our athletic survival. We are a founding member of the ACC and have many good memories of ACC competition.

In addition, leaving the ACC would be very difficult due to contractual obligations (TV contracts, etc.). This is true for Clemson as well as the other ACC members.

Also, I know that the Big 10 would love to have Notre Dame as a member. However, if Notre Dame joins a conference, it has to be the ACC. Because contracts.

I would hope Clemson would pass on that. Most of the teams would be no where close to Clemson so no driving to games anymore. It would be great competition but that distance between schools would be brutal.

the Big Ten. It's obviously a great home but we have no tradition or geographic relationship with it. Nor are we an enormous school like the majority of Big Ten schools (or a member of the AAU, if that matters). The idea of our guys flying up north for every away game just sounds terrible, for the team and the fans. One of the things I like about the ACC is having so many opponents within a day drive from campus (VT, Duke, Wake, UNC, NCSU, GT...and for us, UofSC). Of course, if the ACC were to implode and we got a Big Ten offer to join we should jump at it (assuming the SEC would not be an option).

I would expect VT, UNC or NCSU would be more of a fit for the Big Ten if it came to it...although I would prefer that both the Big Ten and the ACC retain their current members (unless Penn State wants to join us!) and add on as needed from a dissolved Big 12.

I think the best solution for both conferences would be for

1. ND to join the B1G. They have always seemed like a B1G to me. Since I was a kid (1960s) I always lumped them (in my mind) with B1G.

2. B1G and ACC form an alliance agreeing to play 4 OOC games with the other conference every year, and doing the same thing in all sports. Heck, as this stuff shakes out I could even envision how a game could happen every december matching the two champions playing each other. (Lot of stuff would have to happen with the NCAA playoffs so that is not likely.)

3. If I were ACC Commish I would be concerned that B1G would entice 2 or more ACC schools to join.

As to what will actually happen, I have zero idea. It makes more sense to me for B1G to try and get some Big 12 teams (ISU, Kansas, KSU, e.g.) to join.

If I were B1G I would be concerned that ACC would convince ND to join and also get one or more schools to join (dont' have to be B1G) teams and B1G would be sitting as "third on the totem pole" in football.

Penn State (nor any BigTen) at this point in time has no real reason to leave. They have a good conference where many have historic ties to each other. The teams bring in more $$ than ACC teams. Why not just ask Alabama to join the ACC? Neither is going to happen.

Just as silly is a "team trade". Weaker football teams are not giving up the free ride $$ they do not earn.

I agree with you as to BOWLS once being great fun, and now are becoming less. That hurts me as a fan.

The ACC does not require expansion nor do the others. $$ talks, so squeezing every $ out until the thing is dead will continue.

I would respectfully pass. The B10 has nothing really to offer us in the pursuit of championships. Really the one think that would even be considered a plus would be a crack as Minnesota.

The only B10 school I consider as a PEER of Clemson is Purdue as we are just two land-grant schools named after our benefactor that has higher academic standards than the "flagship".

B10 does not have any traditions here . Worse, the "traditions" we see are more about what happens off the field....

Clemson should jump at an offer to join the Big 10, but would likely need some teams in the southeast to come as dance partners.

As far as PSU leaving for the ACC, no one would expect that without Notre Dame coming. But if the 2 did come, the ACC money would rise DRAMATICALLY. The “new look” ACC would command more eyeballs than any other conference.

So I’m sure most of you are aware of the grant of rights all the ACC schools agreed to under Swofford. That media rights agreement goes out to 2036. No ACC teams can reasonably leave the conference unless everything blows up and that grant of rights is torn up making all ACC schools free agents with their media rights. That provision binds everyone together beyond just the expensive buyout provision. I do wonder if the grant of rights is the big stumbling block for independent minded ND joining the conference. Swofford wanted to prevent the ACC from crumbling like the Big East and that was achieved by tying everybody’s boat together.

Here are the schools who should strongly consider joining the ACC because it will boost money for all involved:

- TAM
- ND
- Penn St
- WVa
- Cincy

If TAM is adamant about Texas not being in the SEC, then come to the ACC.

WVa should be in ACC already.

Cincy expands footprint into Midwest.

Penn St gets out from under the OSU dictates.

ND gets into a conf before it is too late

I've never really felt Penn State had a connection with Big Ten schools, a football or cultural connection other than being a giant state school. Kinda like Nebraska and the Big Ten - just not that well aligned. I see a lot more alignment between Penn State and the old Big East guard that is now part of the ACC (Pitt, Miami, BC, Cuse) than I do anything that the Big Ten has. I know it's a big game when OSU or Michigan is involved, but is there really a sense of rivalry other than competing for a top spot? And do Maryland and Rutgers matter in any way? To me that's what makes college football so special - like old Medieval villages turning out en masse for a big tournament. Expansion has snuffed out too many great old rivalries and added a bland, ho-hum element to many Saturdays.

This is really coincidental but I’m a Notre Dame fan here.

If I were in charge of the ACC, I would only target and accept 2 schools: Notre Dame and Penn State.

I know the B1G makes more money NOW but I would work to convince Penn State that the ACC will make even more money in the future and Penn State will be an absolute rock star in this conference as opposed to Big 10 school #11 in the B1G.

Last year, Notre Dame was a rockstar in the ACC. We would just be Big 10 school #15 in the B1G. I never, ever want ND to join the Big10.

That said, don’t expect ND to ever join unless they are absolutely forced to.

This guy gets it.

Add in a few things.....

I live in northern Ohio, but am from Charleston. Most southerners have NO idea the kind of draw Notre Dame has in the north/Midwest. They are the default team for every catholic that did not go to college- and there are TONS of these people up here, not tied to state borders like most state colleges. This group alone would be a MAJOR boon to ACCN subs.

Another point- the current TV contract has an out if two teams are added to the conference. Add Penn State and Notre Dame and our reworked contract should easily outdraw the current Big 10 contract. So PSU could actually see MORE revenue coming in from a switch, and have a better chance at a playoff spot, with a bigger voice in the conference.

Welcome to the board. I’m a Clemson alum with an older brother and a host of friends who are PennStaters. Having experienced both cultures, it’s more likely Penn St would join the ACC than the other way around.

Penn State in the ACC makes more sense in my view and is a better fit than the basecase.

I can’t tell you where the breakpoint is versus the almighty dollar, but academics are still important to the ACC. They are to Penn State as well, light years apart from that wet market for degrees in Columbus.

The truth is that Penn State’s culture, academic standards, and sports programs are better aligned to those of the ACC than where they are now.

I was born in Pennsylvania and my family is from there, so I've always been a Penn State fan, as the home state team. Recently interacting with Buckeyes at CFP games has only served to reinforce me pulling for the Nittany Lions. Attending a White Out game in Beaver Stadium is on my bucket list. I love the Penn State campus. It reminds me of Clemson, only much larger.

Like some others have already said, my ideal would be to have Penn State and Notre Dame join the ACC. Clemson is a charter member of the ACC since it was formed in 1953, nearly 70 years.

I have heard stories that Penn State was actually close to joining the ACC back when they first joined a conference. It seems to me that both Penn State and Notre Dame alumni and culture are more east coast than midwestern. I am sure there are many more PSU alumni in New York, Florida, and other ACC states than in Wisconsin, Minnesota, or Nebraska. Penn State just never seemed to fit that well in B1G. It has been 30 years in the B1G, so maybe the attachment has taken hold.

I understand the current money situation with B1G > ACC payout. I feel like money could change with re-alignment. ACC states populations seem to hold much more future potential than the rust belt. Plus, the weather is better :).

Would you rather travel as a fan to away games in Miami, Atlanta, Boston or West Layfayette, IN, Lincoln, NE, East Lansing, MI? :) Plus, you'd have a short trip to Pittsburgh. I know you guys love you some Panthers. Ha ha.

But if the money were the same, how would you feel about jumping to the ACC?

P.S. Love the Penn State Blue Band.
