Palmetto or Polmetto?

It kills me when broadcasters pronounce our state's name incorrectly. About every 5 minutes on the XM Radio broadcast of the Palmetto Championship at Congaree someone says Polmetto. I guess they called their buddies growing up pols instead of pals. Come on people!

Pecan

If pigs are so smart, why do 66% of them use weak and inferior materials during construction?

Pea-can definitely NOT pea-Kahn

And it’s the lowcountry not low country or Lowcountry

And contrary to what people in Savannah think, she crab soup was created in Charleston, half rubber was created on Folly Beach, and shrimp and grits was created on the shrimp boats of the low country.

Autocorrect is my nemesis! It always changes lowcountry.

How do you pronounce Palm? I think it's funny when people pronounce Appalachia, Appalaishu. Or call The Upstate, the Up Country. But yes, I grew up in the Pal (like your buddy) metto state.

How about Catalpa Trees and Catawba Indians? Are the two terms somehow related? Are the terms somehow related?

“Catawba worms”, which are technically caterpillars, are great in the Edisto River. We had a tree near our river house off the Wire road and it would be loaded with them in the late spring. We would keep our eye on the tree waiting for them to hatch and use a cricket cage to put them in and man those big Edisto redbreasts, bream, and crappie would feast on them.

We say crap-ee in the lowcountry not crop-ee!

I grew up fishing with “Catawba worms” in the Catawba River.

Later in life found the name is actually "catalpa worm" (catalpa sphinx moth - Ceratomia catalpae).
I have an old Catalpa Tree whose roots are tearing up my driveway, but ###, I need those fishing worms.

Do you turn them inside out when you fish with them? We always did. They worked better that way, but it was messy!

I put “Catawba worms” in quotes because I knew they were catalpa not Catawba and caterpillars not worms, but that’s what people call them.

It was always amazing watching them. They would hatch and two weeks later there wouldn’t be many leaves left on the tree. Those suckers can eat. The tree near us was one of the biggest I ever saw.
