One thing that was always a red flag during the Goodwin eta

I never liked the way the players always called him by his first name. Seemed way too much of a peer/peer relationship to me. Never heard a player call Coach Venables “Brent”.

in a critical coordinator position for a top 5 paying program with ZERO coordinating experience.

the hire was DOOMED from the start...........just like the Streeter hire. This isn't a training grounds for coordinators anymore.

Tom Allen was a GREAT HIRE!!

I agree that the Goodwin hire was a failed hire that never had a chance to work bc Goodwin never had any hands on coaching experience at any level. I stated that from the day Dabo broke the news of Goodwin hired as our DC. My opinion didn't go over very well with most T-Netters. I can't count the times that I was ask if I thought I knew more about hiring coaches than Dabo, my answer then was No, and my answer now is No, but he did drop the ball with that hire...

Apparently you (we) and most of TNET did. Watching the D get skull drug with no physicality and the inability to make adjustments changed the perception ..”seeing” was believing .. fortunately the coaches do read TNET and the secretaries drove the point home.

or hs football while that may not be an official requirement, it makes for an odd background and a very rare path for a power 4 DC.

Have you actually studied how many coordinators played ?***

There’s not a coordinator out there who could have made DJ be a better QB. Klubnick played great on his first two games under Streeter, then he was gone. Our our defense was good and great in Wes’ first two years. It dropped off the cliff this year.

The biggest red flag, was that he had never called a defensive game in his life

He wasn’t even a DC calling plays for the spring game

Not even an assistant high school or peewee football coaching stop to his name

I have no doubt that he’s in the top 10% of analysts out there and has an incredible mind

But when an offense does something you don’t expect, or when a defensive player is having a bad game you have got to have a system that allows you to adjust on the fly.

Venables had seen it all and could usually make mid quarter and mid game adjustment (except for the Pitt shovel pass, but he fixed that the next game stone cold)

The other thing that has been very evident is the lack of fundamental tackling principles. It’s a the hallmark of being obsessed with having the guys in the right place and in position and not appreciating that it’s all for naught if you cannot make a sound fundamental tackle.

I think this is something that is lost on some coaches that have never had to play football and think that making a tackle is easy. It takes an incredible amount of practice and it’s something that you cannot take for granted.

Well one thing he does have now is experience and who knows it might have been a great hire. Never know until you get thrown into the heat of battle. Hopefully he will learn from it and be better for it in his future endeavors.

I imagine that was a leftover from him being an analyst who didn’t warrant the title of coach. Can’t really ask players to suddenly start calling the lunch pail kid “Coach” when they’ve been calling him kid.
