Once the SEC poaches every D1 team with a pulse

Jul 30, 2021, 8:55 AM

do they change their name to the "National Conference" and the Conference championship game take the place of the current NCAA Championship Game?

Or the conference gets broken into 8 "pods". Take the winner from each pod and thats the playoff.

That works except and having all Power 5 schools in the same conference (name would not matter) for football equals your number but that leaves out Notre Dame. There will never be a potential Playoff that would not give Notre Dame a chance if they qualify.

I wonder if the NCAA/CFP could have put prevented this type of thing had they anticipated it. For instance, if they put into place that Playoff qualification was solely based on winning your conference championship. In that instance it would be in OU/Texas' best interest to stay in the Big 12, especially with how dismal the PAC 12 is. But alas the 'NCAA' wanted at times two SEC teams and/or an unqualified Ohio State to make for a better CFP... funny how ESPN really runs all of this at the end of the day, eh?

Is it necessarily a bad thing if it improves the field product?

They will leave the NCAA and form a rival that is built

to maximize TV revenue.

They will be completely separate from the NCAA so there will be no cross over games to teams left in the NCAA.

Here’s the thing that short sighted people fail to see.

Many of the top programs of today will not be one of the top programs ten years from now. Trust me, I’ve watched sports for decades and no one wins forever. The NIL thing will increase the gap between the haves and have nots but that gap has always been there. The difference between the haves and which of the “haves” will actually be the ones winning is a matter of leadership within the organization. A super conference is not going to change the way that sports work. It’s not like the Wake Forests of the world ever had a shot at winning a national championship in the modern era anyway. Clemson is one of the haves and Clemson will do whatever they have to do remain one of the haves no matter what changes in the college football landscape. Now whether or not we can sustain our level of success will depend on our leadership.
