There is a second line. You can run anywhere you wish but if you're at all in side the main line, you are ruled out.

The runner is supposed to run in between the first baseline

And the line running parallel to the first baseline.
Trouble happens bc first base is entirely within the first baseline and the runner needs to step back towards at first at some point.
In LL, they have the orange base attached to first base to teach the kids this rule. I never really understood why until my son started playing.
