Offseason Portal Targets.

Which scholarship players should be released to make room ahead of this offseason? We all know how stubborn Dabo is when it comes to recruiting and developing kids out of high school that he can nurture through the program, and the value he places on commitment. But clearly that's not working well enough these past two seasons, so he may as well trash that approach and get on board the portal train like many others.
So, where do we start? Who are some kids Dabo can run off to make room for the new and better? Surely someone has some portal targets they can name, right?
Good times ahead. Go Tigers!

We already know Dabo won't take a single player from the portal, even if it's an area of need.
It would corrupt the culture.

They offered two OL portalers this past offseason. Do you think Dabo would have pulled that offer and not taken one had they chosen us?

Man, I appreciate your effort to start dialogue about stuff like this. After all, it is a message board. But at this point, dissecting what we could do in the portal is like talking about where we are going to put our basketball national championship trophy. Maybe someday, but definitely not anytime soon.

You do not run off players to make room. If they committ to Clemson then Clemson should committ to them. If a player wants to transfer then fine replace him with a portal or new hs recruit but lets not start being like bama and jawjaw and yank scholarships to get a higher ranked kid in. Yes I want Clemson to win yes I want Clemson to remain elite but not like that.

I'd be shocked to see Kobe Pace back. May see a couple OL transfer out if they find themselves buried on the depth chart. May also see a DT or 2 transfer out (specifically #19) and a couple DEs that haven't progressed and likely be bypassed by some incoming freshmen.

It seems like Capehart will be able to get plenty of PT next season.

The better question is how many kids do we lose to the portal this year. We need to know that so we know how many scholly's we have to offer. You notice I didnt say distribute. Since the portal is not an option for this coach, we better beef up recruiting.

chosing to leave on their own. I would be all for not using the portal if we weren't losing players to it. Problem is our players are leaving and we're backfilling with walk ons. I believe our coaching staff is great at developing players. I think some of the receivers who left could have played a major role for us this year. Just because they didn't make an impact where they transferred doesn't mean they wouldn't have here.

There are plenty out there that would be a massive improvement over existing guys.

And...what would these portal targets see that would make them come play offense here? The promise of a different qb who would throw it better (based on the dozen or so he's made)? Offensive play calling that would have to be better ( I mean, it'd have to be, right?)?

You do not release players or you will hurt future recruiting. Recruiting is so hard now that Signing Day is in December because players can enter the Portal or leave for the NFL way after that. If there is room in the 85 number and we find players in the Portal that can help us, we stop taking commitments and take immediate help. Any coach will tell you managing numbers is hard.
