Offense's Issues

After careful consideration I have decided to post a personal experience that may have a bearing on our offense's issues. While I never coached at the college or pro level I did play at a D-1 college and a short pro career.

While playing in the late 50's and early 60's I had a teammate who was an excellent high school player and an All-American in practice. In practice he mad many of us look very ordinary but once in a game he froze. He could not get out of his own way sometimes falling. At least our coach recognized the issue and immediately reduced his playing time even though he continued to excel in practice. Coach even hired a shrink to help him. They met twice a week for therapy then going to five days a week. This continued throughout the season but there was no improvement. The shrink said that some times a person could not be cured of this issue. On a positive this teammate became a successful businessman.

The above is to suggest that DJ has a similar issue. All-American in practice but can't take it to the field. I've taped all of our games and watched them closely over the weekend stopping many times to see what was happening. While the offensive line is not great it is no worse than last years. On numerous possessions DJ looked to the right for an open receiver and when the receiver is covered he never looked to the left where we had a receiver wide open. If the primary receiver is covered DJ panics. I've watched QBs from other school including NCState, Wake and Virginia and thy scan the field for open receivers but not DJ. He looks gang buster in practice but can't seem to take his talent to the field. I believe the coaches recognize this and keep hoping he will improve and even reduced the playbook to simple plays to try and help him. That is not working. Because of his practice the coaching staff seems reluctant to try another QB.

Unless changes are made we can look for a 7 win season and with luck 8 Agree??

2 things need to happen before DJ gets benched......

#1 - the OLine which has NEVER been great, and has been pretty bad since 2017 has to be fixed. That's not going to happen with Caldwell. We've recruited a bunch of 3, 4, & a few 5star Olineman and they've NEVER been developed.

#2 - Playcalling has to be more creative, less predictable, and when something DOES WORK..............STICK WITH IT!!...........DJ looked fine the first TD drive saturday and the playcalling looked COMPLETELY different after that.........same ole, same ole

if the offense is fixed after the above 2 then give QB2 a shot. Problem is #1 is NOT happening this year............the OLine is a lost cause. AFter hearing Dabo/Elliott pressers I'm not sure #2 is happening b/c they just "do what we do" and refuse to adapt/change.
