Noise vs Noise vs Dabo Noise vs Getting the offense in gear

Oct 22, 2021, 11:17 AM

TNET has been around for years and ragged on offense and defense equally. I don't buy this newest excuse for poor performance. These young men have been playing football with social media in their lives and heard it all before, this is 2021 not 1990. And guess what, game time they don't hear boos and catcalls from the Tiger fans. This isn't the Tommy Bowden era you know.

This is simply excuse seeking for Dabo not making great choices nor the hard decisions.

It's not the fault of NIL, the transfer portal, fan noise(except in game when players on the field can't hear the calls).

Dabo's been throwing whinny bits like this for years when he doesn't like people calling him on the carpet. And it's why as a HC he's the butt of a lot of jokes outside of Clemson on the national scene. Because he does get whinny and petty in comments instead of manning up and admitting mistakes or taking pot shots at OSU or whomever he wants to throw shade at. He's not good at throwing shade on competitors, and always comes off as whinny, just like this season excuse list.

These are 4/5 star recruits out there, not a bunch of walk-ons. The OL has looked good in the last few games giving the QB plenty of read time... they can't make him read the field faster. The RBs did their job vs 'Cuse... so can't point at them failing now. That leaves 2 positions, Receivers and QB. I took the time to look at DJ's 8 starts(including the 2 last year) and the overall receptions vs incompletions. I suggest anyone wanting to dig deeper into the real issues should too.

That look at the play by play makes it clear DJ's an equal opportunity passer, but he's also and equal opportunity poor passer. Ross has missed a few as have other receivers. But the many and numerous over/off target throws are on the QB, not to mention the throw aways. This puts pressure on everyone when the QB's consistency during the game(lets not discuss the faux-tossing after the BC game) makes the receivers unsure if they are going to get a ball they can catch. Sure the receivers could block more, but #### if the vanilla play calling to help DJ doesn't make them easy targets for either zone or man-man coverage you really can't fault them.

DJ just can't seem to wrap his head in reading the defenses and making snap judgements to tuck and run , burning the D for yardage forcing opposing DC's to rethink their line coverage. Forcing them to have a spy means one less man to cover a receiver. And please, DJ is not a very good behind the line passer. He should be reading the D and switching off the dump pass and again tuck and run because Clemson has lost yardage in a lot of these games from really crappy dump passes read by every defense including SC State. And if they can read those... toss it out as a play until you've opened up the defense.

I really would like to see a lot better gameplay this year behind the OL... but it MUST start with a QB making good choices and if the QB can't then sit 'em down for a few possessions. DJ doesn't do well with deficits, he didn't vs ND last year either. He can't rally the offense like a DW or TL with as good passing. Which means he's got to rally them by physical play, getting those 3-4-5 yards the defense is leaving to keep drives alive. We can go back to Kelly Bryant who had lots and lots of 3-n-outs, he didn't throw as well, but he moved the ball forward with his feet in enough games to keep drives going.

By this time we all know the big demon isn't outside noise, outside pressure, or the NIL. It's performance during the game where play calling and performance don't seem able to do more than spark a few times but never get on a truly serious roll. Spiers fake punt was a great spark last week... we haven't seen very many from the regular game play. So it's that spark Dabo should be trying to turn into a flame, and if it means using new fuel or source of spark, lets do it. Lets get the books opened up to change flavor from vanilla to fudge ripple or banana split. You'd then see the crowd noise inside the stadium increase from fans, and the noise from outside decrease because improvement is realized and not just smoke screened.

I hope my Tigers do their best and then some vs Pitt. Turn that spark to a big ol fire and bring home more than just a win we back into. Bring home an honest victory and carry it through the rest of the season. That's how you quell noise you don't like, not by excuses.

Yep. Buncha noise everwhere.

Not a popular stance but a lot of truth... Which does sometimes hurt. That said, I actually welcome as a good sign when Dabo gets this way. I've found when he has, it's because he's identified the problems and are working on them. He won't dump on anyone, coach or player.

We're in good shape. Do agree he shouldn't have used the outside noise arguments. Paper Tiger. If I was a betting woman, I'd bet Dabo is just publicly sending a message to his staff and players that he has their back and they don't need the burden of coaching/playing scared. Hopefully they loosen up tomorrow and we see a complete Tiger W.

If this is how Dabo sends messages to his team it's pretty unprofessional.

If the Pitt game is more of what we've seen already, then sure as shootin' he's not taking the right approach to changing the team dynamic.

I'll be watching the game and hoping to see the fire I spoke of.

Win or lose I support my Tigers... but I reserve the right to throw all kinds of shade on excuse makers.

Been watching them and pulling for them since the 70s. Seen the ups, the downs, the excuses, et al. The Dabo era has been exciting. Just wish Dabo 2011 could meet Dabo 2021 and have a bit of a discussion with him.

You lost me when you rationalized the WRs dropping balls, not blocking, and running poor routes by saying that sometimes passes aren't thrown well and they probably aren't happy with the play calls.

What an absurd stance to take in defending the WRs who have done little this season to warrant defense not given to those around them.

If you want to defend the offense that's fine, though I'm not sure they deserve it, but to pretend that others are at fault for the WRs lack of performance and much worse lack effort is misguided.

Like I posted, go back and look at play by play for the 8 games DJ has been the QB.

The WRs are running vanilla routes in 2021 because DJ hasn't been able to deliver the ball consistently anywhere on the field. His field percentage completion from left to right from behind the line of scrimmage to deep field is pock marked with very low percentage receptions often with over-throws or late throws giving the receiver no time to advance.

A defense can pick out on film week to week where DJ throws in this vanilla play calling and keep pressure on the targeted WRs. And all the Defender has to do is tie up a WR for a 2-3 seconds and DJ can't 'see' any receivers and gets into a deer-in-the-headlights stance instead of immediately rolling out of the pocket and up the field.

Ross has many times had more than enough separation(for him) to catch balls or go 50-50, but DJ often over-throws him. The dump routes aren't working... the 'Cuse game saw lots of lost yardage because the ball does get out quick enough.

The receivers aren't perfect, but neither should they be seen as scapegoats for lack of production. Plenty of good receiver action from 10-20 yards down the field last week. The Spiers throw to TE, Allen is a prime example of good trust between 2-man coverage receiver and a competent passer.

You can't tell me that in 6 games this season the WR core was so lackluster causing the non-production. Nope... that don't fly on film.
