No doubt in my mind the SEC has bigger plans than 16

If they are just one of four, 16-team conferences and are equal footing with the other three, it makes little sense to just make their in conference schedule HARDER.
Looks like their plan is to call all the shots and pick the winners and losers. It is getting close right now to the SEC and everyone else. Maybe the SEC gets itself a 4-team conference championship tournament and the winner of that plays the top ranked team from the ROY bus, and there's your national champ every year.
I still say that unless there is some grander plan than to just be the first to 16, this is a bad deal for the bottom half of the SEC as it currently stands. And why would any other team want to join an SEC that already contains BAMA, Oklahoma, Georgia, Texas, LSU, Florida and Auburn, unless that was their only way to qualify for the CFP?
It would be hilarious if the CFP chose to stand pat at 4.
