I live in Boone. The western side of watauga county looks like a war zone. It’s honestly an apocalyptic looking situation. Roads and bridges completely washed away. Lots of homes gone and lots of missing or killed people. There are places where the river was 15-20 yards wide that are now 60-100 yards wide. My buddy and myself went around Saturday and Sunday with 4 wheelers and chainsaws trying to clear roads to the most deviated areas. Came across a woman and a 91 year old man needing to evacuate But they refused to let me bring them out by ATV. My house flooded (about 6” of water in the house) but I was much luckier than lots of people. I have seen Blackhawk helicopters and chinooks flying back and forth from the cove creek area evacuating folks. I heard yesterday that the national guard has air lifted 500+ off beech mountain and rescue efforts are ongoing. Pray for the people in my area. Asheville looks like it may have taken the worst hit of all but lots of people needing help here in watauga and avery county as well. Go Tigers

In a past life, I worked as a property and casualty claims examiner. I worked Hurricanes Hugo and Andrew. The remnants of last weeks storm reminds me A LOT of Hugo minus all of the flooding. I am still in shock by what the Broad River did to Chimney Rock.

It's ok. The president knows how to use a telephone. Not sure about the VP though. Stay safe, I just got back from a humanitarian run up there and some Co workers are on the way up with helicopters this week.

oh yeah we definitely needed a presidential motorcade traveling through the wreckage clogging up the already crumbling infrastructure.
Get over yourself.

Do you see any organization such as FEMA or the Red Cross providing help to anyone?

I have not seen the red cross but that dosent mean they aren’t here. I know of multiple people personally that are applying for help from FEMA. One of my employees lost their truck. It ended up about a half mile from his house leaned up against a telephone pole, in what is now the river. He applied for fema assistance. Most of the aid I have seen to this point seems to be coming from local businesses and members of the community. Lots of guys sawing logs and anyone with machinery is out helping make the roads passable. I’ve seen some guys with 5th wheel and gooseneck trailers coming through town with bottomless of water and equipment but I’m not sure of their origin

I live in Hickory, and the drone of helicopters leaving our airport for the mountains is constant. After a bit more quality time with my chainsaw in my yard, I hope to spend a few weekends in WNC with Baptists on Missions in the upcoming months. They will probably have a presence up there for the next year plus.

After Fred hit Cruso and Canton in 2021, I gained tremendous respect for the Baptist men’s organization. They were boots on the ground. Did more than anyone else to get people in housing again. Can’t say enough positive about them.

Yes, they are both there. FEMA critical needs checks already hitting checking accounts.

This really reminds me of the devastation from Katrina---and I don't mean at all to minimize things in W. North Carolina....I own a cabin up in Maggie Valley and through today, I still don't know if it's ok or what as I've been unable to make contact with any of my neighbors....stay safe and hopefully, help is on the way.

I heard from someone in Maggie yesterday and many homes survived ok, just depends on proximity to creeks or slides, hope yours made it. I hear that many vacation homeowners are offering their places to house survivors or rescue workers, etc. Heart warming stuff along with the heart breaking stories.

I've never had to deal with losing everything of value to me, and I can't begin to imagine enjoying life one day and losing everything by the next day. That has to be one of the worst things to happen to somebody, and it's so easy to pray for folks that's experiencing such a tragedy...

Hello from a fellow Boone man. Yes it’s a war zone up here and like you said the west side got hammered. I live in the deep gap area and my business in Foscoe. The river is now owner of half my lot! Hope you stay safe.

I drove from Knoxville to High point today. I passed a number of Power Company Trucks from Ky, Ohio, Illinois and Indiana heading toward the NC Mountains!!! Gif Bless these guys leaving their homes and families to come give us a hand. I know this is not an isolated incident and we send them the other way when needed.
I DO NOT CARE, if you are a Republican or a Democrat or an immigrant or someone born in the USA. When the chips are down, we are ALL AMERICANS and are not only willing to help others, but anxious to help!!!!
God Bless you All and

I live in rural Yancey County back in a holler and echo the sentiments. My road was largely spared, but I drove an 8 mile stretch along the North Toe River and did not see a single habitable home. I saw at least 10 that were no longer there, one of which the neighbor watched wash away immediately after the owner re-entered.
We have spent much of the last few days witnessing some of the best of humanity - people helping people.
