National Championship viewership numbers down over 9%

I guess fans are losing interest. One thing that will surely motivate change with NIL, Transfer Portal, Conference massing, etc. is if fans stop watching and networks start losing money.

Check out this statement:
"The Ohio State-Notre Dame matchup did better than title games in 2021 (18.7M) and 2023 (17.2M). However, CFP is dealing with what seems to be a decline in viewership, given that the natty averaged at least 24.2 million viewers between 2009-2020, according to Sports Media Watch."

1. The playoffs wer too drawn out. Lost its continuity by the last game.

2. The championship feels less legit because the drastic importance of every game of the regular season gets nullified by all the lower seeds getting hot. 4 team playoff was much better.

3. The TRANSFER PORTAL and wild NIL has sucked much of the non-NFL special vibe of college football out.

4. When CFB becomes more like the NFL there is less of a reason to watch it when the NFL is right there. CFB was unique. Now it is just an inferior NFL clone. The NFL is vastly superior as a professional league. CFB WAS superior to NFL in the eyes of many. But many of the reasons that people preferred CFB OVER NFL are now mostly gone or totally gone.

Can’t agree with 1. And 2.
But the portal and portal he NiL is killing it.
It also was on the same night as all the inauguration festivities.

I agree with points 1 + 3 the most. #4 I could maybe get in line with but completely disagree with #2.

December should be CFP ball with it ending on January 1st. However they need to make it happen it needs to because I love the expanded CFP it lost momentum when it got to January.

Portal + NIL ramifications have suckeddd. No way around that. I'm not mad at players getting theirs but dadgum does it get frustrating.

Contrary to belief, I don't believe the regular season has been watered down. It actually kept me interested this year waaaaay more than when we had the 4-team playoff. I don't care for the whole "you lose one game and you're basically out because the CFP says so..." Or the FSU situation where they got hosed because SEC baby.

Bump that. I like that we got to face Texas in Austin this year. It'd be neat to host a CFP game in the Valley. Despite my dislike for ND + Ohio State the 7th and 8th seeds were in the CFP championship which is cool.

CFP needs some retooling sure like I think reseeding after each round would be good. Emphasises why you'd want to be the top seeds. And I want there to be minimum chance we get conference rematches in natty games.

Absolutely agree the playoffs were drawn out too far. Clemson played 2 weeks before there CFP game. Ohio State had 3 weeks off because of not playing in the B1G conference championship. There was far too much time in between the conference championships and the 1st round. Also there was too much time in between each round.

#2 I would agree, but only because the more teams that get in, the less important the regular season games become.

#3 I agree 100%. When you don't know who is actually going to be on your team next season, or what new face is on your team, it takes away from feeling connected to the school. I also feel like NIL will eventually hurt the NFL product and it definitely is hurting the CFB product. Maybe not in ratings yet, but it will eventually.

#4 100% true. I preferred the CFB over NFL because I felt players played harder because they wanted to make it to the NFL. Now these guys are getting paid in CFB openly and they don't seem as driven to become great.

The game certainly didn't seem as big of a deal to me as it has in years past. Maybe it's because of the 12 team playoff idk. I still watched tho but the hype around the game was nothing like the 4 team playoff or bcs championships.

I liked the 12 team playoff. It will be expanding at some point too.

Agree that the playoffs were too drawn out. I enjoyed them, but the schedule needs to be tightened up. The Natty should be New Years Day and then college football should be done. End of January almost is ridiculous.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The NFL is more popular than college football.

I don’t think college football is doing itself any favors by lengthening the season and encroaching on the NFL playoffs. I realize that they purposely had the CFP on a non-NFL night, but I still think a lot of people were already in NFL playoff mode and might not have cared quite as much about CFP.

As you stated, the more college football becomes semi-pro, the less appealing it is when people can watch the real pros play a better brand of professional football.

This year was a terrible date. MLK, Inauguration Day, and CFP Final on the same day. Monday night is not good…there’s a reason why the Super Bowl is a Sunday evening. Not a school day/school night at 8p.

If you look at playoff viewership as a whole, it’s up. Revenue is up.

Semifinals and finals are down. So playoff viewership like-for-like is certainly down. Total playoff viewers I guess is up because there is 11 games vs. 3.

I didn’t watch the final this year and little of the semis, which a few years ago would have been unthinkable to me. If Clemson is not in it I really don’t care anymore.

The games feel like a chore to watch with all the additional ads with two minute warnings, longer ad breaks and immediately cutting to commercial the second any player looks injured and for replay reviews. Plus with the running clock, you get less actual football but it takes longer to watch it all. The product is in decline.

Your last paragraph is the biggest issue for me. Most of the NFL playoff games this weekend were completed in about 3 hours and 15 minutes. College games are taking much longer. The long and frequent stoppages in play during college games is very tedious. They are equally as bad in person as they are on tv.

I watched maybe 1 quarter. I is really sad what our State legislatures, the networks, the money schools, some fans and players have done to start the destruction of college athletics.

It’s funny that ESPN ratings were down. That one of the games they wanted.

It’s hard to watch a bunch of selfish enabled kids get out their for show. If they are going to be paid to play then my goal is to have athletic scholarships eliminated. A kid making a half a million dollars or more can pay his on way.

It’s unfortunate that Dabo’s culture at Clemson has taken a back seat to greed and money. These are the kids I worry about especially when the reach their 30’s. The parents are becoming just as greedy as the kids.Terry Saban met with recruits moms during their Sunday breakfast. Instead of asking about education and how Nick would mold their sons into good men she said most of their focus was about NIL and how much money could their sons make while at Alabama. She asked Nick if all they’re interested in is $$$$$$$ then why are we continuing to do what we do. Saban stepped from the HC job at Alabama soon after.

When you lose the moms you have lost the best parent who had the right priorities straight and was concerned about their kids long term best future. I figure at least 50% of them will be bankrupt by their 30’s.

I am just waiting until it trickles down to the HS level of Athletics. Then amateur sports will be on life support.

IMO many non student athletes should receive some of that NIL money for what they bring to the schools.

I hope all of you have a much better year in 25’ 🐅🐅🐅 ?? Hope for a couple of additional NC’s for Dabo and the Tigers.

Go Tigers Basketball 🐅
