My guess as to how Clemson will handle the NIL.

Jun 24, 2021, 3:53 PM

Just my guess based on what I'm hearing and reading. There are companies already lined up to be agents for the athletes. (They don't call themselves agents but that is what they are.) They have already set up contracts ready to be signed on 7/1. I have no doubt they have already spoken to parents of athletes, and probably athletes themselves. I have no doubt that companies are already talking to the agencies telling them what their marketing needs are (I want a fast running back....I want a five star QB...I want a big, burly lineman...etc.) as well how much they are willing to pay.

Think of the agencies as being the equivalent of agencies that college coaches use (not just the Jimmy Sexton's who negotiate contracts, but also speaker's bureaus, advertising agencies who negotiate TV commercials, etc.).

I heard one such agent on Finebaum yesterday saying his company has had long discussions with compliance officers at several schools assuring them that they want to work with the schools to help the athletes make money and help them comply with the law and the NCAA.

So, here is how I think Clemson (and other schools) will handle it.

There will be a person at Clemson in charge of relationships with the various agencies. They will work with the agencies. Then, part of recruiting will be selling the high school students, and his parents, on how Clemson will assist the player to legally make as much money as possible. In a year or two coaches will not only be selling "Look how many of our kids go to the NFL. We can prepare you for the NFL better than any other school can." It will also be, "Here is how much money our players have made while playing football. Here are the agencies we work with. Here are the players who have signed with those agencies. We will work with you to make sure that you are dealing with a reputable agent who will work in your best interest, not try and rip you off for his benefit."

The coaches who figure out how to handle the agents and work with them, not against them, and figure out how to steer the players to reputable agents will be the successful ones.

I have no doubt that Clemson is already working on this. I have no doubt that Clemson already has a person (probably with a small staff) working with several agencies hammering out details on how the school and the agency can work together.

I'm guessing the person with the small staff is

And probably the same person looking for a big, burly lineman.

Hehe. Not gonna touch that one.

But, on a more serious note, I'm guessing it is the same guy who is in charge of the transfer portal.

Yeah, I won't touch that one, either.***

Here is my question for you and it’s pretty much the same as I had for how the ACCN was going to create money from thin air: Is this a new market being created for these advertisers or is it simply reallocation of existing marketing dollars? The only spaces I can think of that have expanded lately are gambling on sports and erectile disfunction drugs. Would an athlete want to endorse either of those? Will athletes be able to endorse gambling websites since the NCAA is essentially crippled? “Hey Bama fans - come to Draft Kings to buy me this week because I’m gonna get 200 yards rushing on the Gamecocks this week and you can take that to the bank!” Might be some conflicts of interest there and now all the NFL exists for is fantasy football.

Those are great questions. I have no idea how the NCAA, conferneces, schools or the courts will handle which types of advertising are off limits (gambling, tobacco, X-rated web sites, etc.).

I do think, optimistically speaking, that this is more of a "new market."

1. Local advertisers: I think if a car dealer in Spartansburg wants to pay DJ $1000 bucks to sign autographs at his dealership one June afternoon he will go through DJ's agent to make the deal.

2. National advertisers: If Ford Motor Company decides it wants Justyn Ross to do a commercial for them, then they will also go through his agent.

I have no idea how companies decide their marketing strategy. Would a shampoo company sign Trevor Lawrence to a contract after his freshman year? Probably. But, they wouldn't be interested in paying him under the table, like a booster might, to go to Clemson. They would offer him a contract regardless of which school he went to.

Pre-season Heisman favorites can now go out at make a deal with a company to sell posters, for example.

Disclaimer: I don't like the idea of NIL, period. But, I'm a dinosaur. I think the purpose of an athletic scholarship should be for a kid to use his athletic ability to pay for a college education. But, that horse has left the barn. The NCAA gave up on the idea of "student-athlete" a long time ago.

I'm just saying that some schools will figure out a way to use NIL as a recruiting tool. And, I can see how it isn't all bad. There might be some good things come out of it.

Each player will receive a cashier's check for $1.32 each week, regardless of whether they play or not.

I would hope that the scholarships would go bye-bye! This would be part of the "pay". I would hope that $150k is part of the payment consideration!

Goodbye CFB as we know it. It's going to end up like the WNBA

Interesting post. One thing though...as far as "Compliance"

Jun 24, 2021, 6:52 PM

there will be none because it is going to be a free for all and the NCAA and any other bodies encharged with monitoring and regulating it won't do anything. No one in that role will be able to keep up and even if they can they aren't going to touch it.

It, in my opinion, is quite likely to be disastorous for the sport we love.

What will happen when a QB gets 1 million endorsement check and the 5 guys blocking for him gets nothing. Or if a cornerback gets more money than a middle linebacker but the backer has better stats. The team concept will be destroyed, and you can through out the booster who gives a QB a $1000 under the table but this is on a different level where everyone is going to know what a player is getting paid.

Brett, I’m sure you’re right, and I’m also sure every school will be doing the exact same thing.

Something that I think concerns a lot of Clemson fans is that being able to demonstrate a schools ability to help a prospect make money will become a key decision factor in recruits consideration on which school to attend. I believe the larger schools, with larger fan and alumni bases, and schools in larger markets, will have a decided advantage in helping their student athletes make more money as compared to a smaller school like Clemson in a smaller market.

That’s my concern with NIL.

***THIS***

If car dealers will spend for endorsements , how many car dealers are in OH, TX and CA, vs SC. If you already have alumni giving to bag men, they can now do it in the open and take it as a business expense. TL would have had made NIL money where ever he went, but what about a 4 star OL, how much NIL will they make at Clemson vs txa&m.

Already happened with that recruit that chose so cal. Totally agree with you. We already have trouble spending money on the "other" sports.

I think it'll turn bball into a worse zoo than it already is. Namely because you only need 3-4 top recruits...

I'm thinking it won't affect Dabo quite as much. He shys away from recruits just chasing the money and the "I".
