Mickey Plyler's Blog: Duke Review

Duke Review

Duke Review
I feel like every time I write a review of a game this season I have to preface it by saying, "This was not a win against a great opponent, but...."

Like most of the eight wins this season, the Tigers came out and looked very impressive once again in dominating Duke on the ro

I wouldn't say I'm "excited" because we beat Wake and Duke on the road, but I would say that I'm excited we finally seem to have found a way not to play down to lesser opponents on the road. Let's hope we don't let our guard down the next few weeks.

The excitement comes in consistence, not opponents...

In years past these could well have been 31-27 wins, or worse. Instead, they were nationally televised blood-lettings that have created a positive, ruthlessly efficient impression of Clemson around the nation.

And that excites me for the future of these young men.

I agree. Consistently taking care of business against teams we should beat is a huge step for us.

Not much to complain about

Duke is not much more than an average team but winning big when you should is great to watch. I think the only concern I saw was the lack of push upfront by the DL. Renfree had ALL DAY to throw; Duke's OT's are pretty good but that was disappointing to me.
I wish more 2-3 players could have gotten more reps, in particular Stewart and Townsend.
Worst luck was having AE out as he runs for 200 plus easy. Duke made Brooks look like a tried and true RB even though he plays WAY too high with his pad level. Would have loved to see AE get his yards so all the idiot UNC fans would realize there are other great RB's to watch.

Nice win but ACC+Auburn are so awful, hard to gauge Clemson.

Nov 5, 2012, 1:41 PM

I'm not sure that Clemson has taken a step up by (unlike previous years) beating the teams that it should beat, because the opponents have been so much worse than normal. Auburn and the ACC are just pathetic. Clemson needs to beat SCar to prove it can beat anybody decent.

Clemson hasn't beaten a good team yet. And Clemson has only beaten 2 AQ teams with winning records, Wake & Duke.

The ACC absolutely stinks this year.
* The ACC is 5-10 vs non-con AQ schools
* The ACC has zero wins over currently ranked non-con opponents.
* The ACC has 4 losses to non-AQ teams.

ACC Wins Over AQs:
FSU beat USF
Clemson beat Auburn
NCSU beat UConn
UMD beat Temple
UVA beat PSU

ACC Losses to AQs:
NCSU lost to Tennessee
UMD lost to UConn
UMD lost to WVU
BC lost to NW
Miami lost to K-State (52-13)
UNC lost to Louisville
Duke lost to Stanford
VT lost to Pitt
VT lost to Cinci
UVA lost to TCU

Notable ACC Losses to Non-AQs:
BC lost to Army
GT lost to BYU
GT lost to MTSU
UVA lost to LaTech

It's looking like back to back 10 win seasons and your suicide tendencies are (yawn) boring me. I am going to enjoy every minute of this season and continue to block guys that can't.

It's unfortunate that we didn't get to play better competition. It's not our fault that AU fell apart, MD keeps tearing ACL's, GT ran out of their old coach's players, Logan Thomas can't pass the ball, Duke is Duke, Wake is Wake, Da U is Da U. . . we'll probably get some competition from NC State if they haven't packed it in. I hope so. We need a wake up call before SC. I think NC State will scare us out of complacency without beating us.

Most years it's VT that plays a relatively easy schedule, we can't always play tough teams, but we try.

On the bright side, we may end this season and open next against UGA.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not our fault SOS stinks. Just saying CU is hard to gauge.

Nov 5, 2012, 3:08 PM

We should crush ACLU this week. I hope NCSU plays as well as they did against UVA, not as well as they did against FSU, and that by the 3rd quarter our starters are resting up for SCar. I don't think ANYBODY at Clemson will take SCar lightly. Hopefully we go 11-1, and beat a quality bowl opponent in a BCS bowl. Maybe we close with UGA and open with UGA? That would be interesting.

Razz,

Your point is well made, but the season will end with an answer to this question when Clemson plays USC and Florida State plays Florida. If the ACC comes out on the right side of those two games, it legitimizes the top two teams in the ACC as top ten teams nationally.

The ACC has been a cakewalk for us so far****
