Still laughing at anyone saying SMU wouldn't add to any Power 4 League. Money talks...

Indeed they are (or were according to one source at least).

Depends on what they're adding. They're not going to add ratings, a competitive team, or an actual market (In the DFW market, they're probably around 7-8 in terms of popularity). They do add money in the short term by not taking any shares, but once that stops, not sure they add anything lasting.

They will be as competitive as they want to be with their checkbooks. Being In a power conference will help with transfer portal and recruiting. They were once a competitive team with their checkbooks why not again?

They were not competitive, they owned Texas in the early 80's before the death penalty, and now with NIL the door is open again.

Not really. They had a 4 year run, but were well on the decline before the death penalty. Paying players helped, but as much, if not more credit should go to Meyer before leaving for the Pats. It’s going tot take much more than money for the ponies to be a legitimate threat.

FSU just proved it can be done with a checkbook. SMU has MUCH more at their disposal.

Did they prove that, really? If Mafah doesn't wiff on pass protection, is that what we're saying right now? Too many people have watched "Pony Excess" and think the money is all SMU needs to be competitive, but they're generally people who only know SMU from that and aren't actually from the area. It's a stepping stone school, with minimal interest, and a a stadium smaller than some HS stadiums in the state. As we should all know by now, just throwing money at a problem, doesn't necessarily fix it.

Would you say fsu was better than they have been in several years with portal team. If the answer is yes then i would say it worked. Did I say they were the national champion team nope but they were definitely at top 15 team. Before portal they lost to Jacksonville st.

Sure, they looked better, but then you also saw how quickly the wheels fell off, and I'm not just referring to the bowl game. I believe they had somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 players transfer out at the end of the season. I'm not even against the portal, I just think FSU is a bad example.

Actually I live in DFW and SMU is not 7 or 8. They will be good for ACC with DFW market. SMU can set record too when Clemson comes to SMU for FB game. with Clemson traveling fans both teams could fill Cotton Bowl. ATL to DFW straight flight

Oh my Lord! I live in Dallas, and had never thought of that possibility! That would be an AMAZING experience to play at Cotton Bowl. (Although, we both know if there was any chance of money, Jerry would get involved and have the game moved to AT&T)

Yes, they absolutely are 7th or 8th, and they've been that my entire lifetime, and usually even lower. I don't say that as someone unfamiliar with the situation, as I'm a 7th generation Texan and previously lived in Ft. Worth. The hierarchy in DFW is as follows: 1. Texas 2. A&M 3. OU 4. TCU 5. Tech 6. Baylor
SMU falls below all of those schools. They rarely play at the Cotton Bowl anymore as they can't fill it, even with Clemson fans traveling. Gerald Ford Stadium is nice, but it's tiny.

That kind of financial backing doesn't hurt. I've worked with a couple clients in the Mockingbird Lane/Highland Park area around SMU. There is more than one billionaire in that neighborhood that is fond of the local university.

Money does talk. Over the last 50 years MONEY has bought the University of Texas mediocre performance on the football field (15th nationally in won loss records) 1 Natty, and membership it two new football conferences after it killed the Southwest Conference. Texas hired a Clemson basketball coach and a UNC football coach which in retrospect seems backwards. The UNC guy at Texas won only 2 conference Championships and was dominated by Oklahoma.

####. That was a horrible buy. With all the talent there, he should've had 3-4 Nattys. There's a reason he was referred to as Coach February in Texas.

Toured their campus , Bush library, and stadium in 2018 while out in Dallas for the Cotton Bowl. Stadium at the time looked similar to Wallace Wade Stadium in size, just a bit nicer . There’s some money within 2 or 3 miles in those surrounding neighborhoods as I remember. I would have had no problem if the ACC added SMU, Baylor TCU, Houston, Texas Tech.

Reading that article, it is easy to see that SMU bought their way into the ACC

just to be better positioned with the inevitable next round of realignment happens. They HAD to get in a major conference, to have any chance at being in the upper tier when this much rumored split into two groups, the Haves and Have Nots, happens.
From the monetary standpoint, I am certainly jealous. If Clemson had such a benefactor, you can bet Dabo's stance on the Transfer Portal would not be as staunchly against as it is. Right now, he is just not wanting to enter a game he knows he can't win, because the cards are HEAVILY stacked against him.

Nobody will ever go to their games unless a good school comes in. Nobody will watch them on tv, either. All they bring is the DFW market, maybe, but that market is already UT, OU and Agroids. They will add nothing much to the ACC and fortunately for them now is that cheating is legal.
