pitching, for sure. Specifically, pitching that consistently gets AHEAD in the count, vs pitching from behind, which we seemed to do a whole lot of this year. Quite a few of the home runs we gave up in post season were, in part due to pitchers being behind in the count, and having to throw a "get-me-over" pitch that caught way too much of the plate, and way too much of the opponents bat.

This is nothing magical. It has been true for as long as the beisaball has been played. When hitters get ahead in the count, their batting average skyrockets. I often use Garris as an example, but he is far from the only one. He chunks it all over the place, and then when he HAS to throw a strike with that straight fastball of his, it gets deposited in the Cheap Seats.

Whether it is new arms, or actually (GASP) coaching up the arms we have to make them more consistently find the strike zone, pitching WILL be the key to Team #128 advancing farther than Team #127. Put a moustache and some mutton chops on Greg Maddux, rename him Parnell Burnside the 4/5th, and run him out there. I'll bet he could still make college hitters look silly, right now.
