but honestly with a 12 team playoff and the big and sec have guaranteed like 8 spots between both conferences..why scheduled tough competition out the gate?

The truth hurts. Ruins the B1G/SEC narrative.

Screw Calford.

The days of needing to play decent out of conference teams to boost your SOS are over. Just win the conference and it doesn't matter.

SOS through three weeks is about as meaningful as preseason AP rankings.

And Tennessee did at least schedule NC State. It's not exactly their fault that State has looked like total garbage through 3 weeks.

Agreed. NC State and Wake aren't doing much to help that group's S.O.S. This may be more of an indictment on the current ACC than some T-Netters want to admit.

Yeah ACC not looking great. We need Miami to continue to look good and be undefeated when we face them in the ACC championship game. May be the ACC's best shot at getting 2 teams in.

More or less meaningful than the score at halftime?

I agree with the other posters (and maybe you) that strength of schedule is a term that could be retired in the current college football model. There is very little incentive any more to schedule tough OOC opponents. For us, it is win the ACC or miss the playoffs. For the Big 2, getting the Ws is probably more valuable than playing a team with a pulse.

There are currently 6 SEC teams in the top 7. Seems important to keep that ranking, whatever it takes. I know the SEC teams will end up playing each other, but it will be interesting if somehow the conference has 6 teams in the top 12 at season's end. Many years, I root for maximum chaos. This year, a part of me is pulling for SEC teams, because I want to see the system get broken. I guess I should pull for the B1G, too. Doing this does not impact us, because at this point, I believe our only avenue to the CFP is to win the ACC. I suppose we could run the table, lose a close game to a Miami in the ACCCG, and maybe get in as an at large, but I kinda doubt it.
