Living overseas during football season...

Jan 19, 2017, 10:51 AM

really stinks. Having to use VPNs (Virtual Private Network) to watch games because ESPN is blocked outside the US, staying up until all hours of the night to watch a game across the world, and not being with other Americans to talk football with. No, I don´t serve in the military.

During the 2015 season, i was giddy with excitement as we had one big win after the other. I remember checking my ESPN app for updates on the Notre Dame game on Sunday morning as I was sitting in a church in Asia. I watched our lone defeat to Alabama on a projected screen in a hotel in Europe (with a Bama fan friend).

This past season I was Lucky enough to be stateside for the entire season. I got to watch all of the games with fellow Clemson fans. I even got to attend the South Carolina game and the ACC Championship game in Orlando! My fiance is new to American football; she doesnt yet understand it. Nor does she get the excitement over our National Championship. I explained to her that I have spent many years cheering for a team that lost most of our games. Who else remembers our 1-10 season, with our only win coming against the Coots? If my memory serves me well, that was the last season under head coach Tommy West. Ive sat through pouring rain, scorching heat, and more recently suffered through poor internet connections to watch our beloved Tigers play.

This is a special time, no doubt about it. Whether in América or somewhere, Im proud to call myself a Clemson Tiger!

“Clemson wasn’t that much better with Trevor Lawrence, if at all.”

Here in Sicily, no one understands :(

But if I am honest, I really don't give a ####. I have Clemson magnets, stickers and plates on my car and wear orange everywhere. Who cares about blending in :) Plenty of Alabama fans here though so that helped!

Hmmm...Don't remember a 1-10 season (although the chickens had back-to-back 1-10 & 0-11 seasons)....You may be referring to the 3 win season under Coach Tommy West

I was at the game @ Virginia that year. I was tailgating after the game with friends (UVA fans) near the Clemson buses, when Tommy West walks right past us looking completely stunned. One of the guys in our group walked right up to West and started talking to him, trying to encourage him. It didn't seem to help. I'll never forget that.

Sometimes the road to the truth is so elusive it's confusing and reality becomes illusion.

If it makes you feel better, I live in the Sierra Nevada foothills between Sacramento and Tahoe..

You may have more people in Asia who know anything about college football than we have here ;)
My daughter was bummed the day after winning. When asked what was up, she said it stunk because nobody here cared.
Its hard leaving the motherland (Charleston for me) and not having that sense of community. That's where this tigernet thing comes in to play.
Glad you were able to enjoy it.. we got to 5 games last year, including Phx, but Orlando was our only game this year.
Cheers tiger brother!

West Coast Tigers

Jan 20, 2017, 4:07 AM

I live in Martinez, CA (20 miles NE of San Francisco). I can honestly say that after several years of "talking up" the Tigers I have managed to create a nice group of west coast Clemson fans. Last year I bought a Clemson flag and hung it on the front of my house. I was amazed when 4 or 5 of my neighbors who I did not know previously stopped and told me how much they enjoyed watching Clemson on TV. One even said her granddaughter went on a visit to Clemson and had applied there - all because she saw the games on TV. It's interesting to watch the games with them and see Clemson through their eyes - things we all take for granted like the colors, the Tiger, running down the hill, boarding the buses to ride around the stadium, etc....all good....

In Singapore for the entire 2014 season, came home for 18 months and now back again at New Years still here after the natty.

I know the VPN frustration and the watch EsecPN app. I had friends texting me during lunch "did you see Gallmans TD?". No sorry I was eating something I can't completely identify. No one here recognized my Clemson Paw polo shirt bought at Ibrahim's but it gave me a good feeling knowing so many friends would pay $0.50 per text to keep me informed during the game. And they aren't all Clemson - one from Seattle (UW) and Raleigh (NCSU) and dad (Duke) and most of all my wife (Maryland).

You lost me at lost most of our games and 1-10 season.
I can only remember but 2 losing seasons in my life and I'm 45.
I'm sure there were a few more but West last season and Dabo's first full season are the only 2 I remember.
