Listening to freshman and player interviews across the country

Do they not have public speaking classes in High School anymore?? Really hoping the schools start giving these kids some pointers on talking to the media, but as a whole it seems young people these days have an insanely hard time speaking to people in person.

For the most part, Clemson players seem well spoken and polite when speaking with the media. Some I've seen from other teams...not so much.

Young folks speak another language. I can’t keep up with what means what when they speak. You are correct though and it’s best if some do not speak.

Strange when you do hear someone that actually has command of the English language.
Kids have been saying "you know" for a while. You know what I'm sayin? like a long while. Like, you know.
I've been in meetings and heard people continually say "like".

That’s what drives me crazy it’s the “you know” and “like” then the freezing mid speak. Not trashing the kids public speaking isn’t an easy thing for a good bit of people I took a public speaking class in HS that helped me a lot

If you have trouble understanding their speaking, try reading what they pass off as writing!!
I have to force my grands to write in cursive, because it isn't taught anymore. We had to teach them instead.

That is one of the most stupid moves made in education in recent years. We just keep dumbing it down and teaching less. I teach some college courses . The ability to write and communicate is poor and I'm mostly working with adult learners

they did they were electives.
Eh, these are 18 yr old kids. Shoot, some may still be 17. Let 'em grow up, they will change. Rest assured CU will coach them up.
Go look at an ETN interview from freshman year, then compare with one as a Sr. You'll see.
My kids aren't college athletes and I can assure you they would struggle in an on-camera interview, as most of us would.
Experience counts for a lot here.

Most of these kids went to Public High Schools...need we say more?
But in answer to your question, no they probably don't and if they did it wouldn't be worth a darn.
Can you imagine a white teacher telling some black kid that he's not speaking correct English? Talk about career ending. K-12 public schooling is terrible, and if you're from a low-income 1 parent family your chances of getting a good education are even worse.
Just pointing out the Elephant in the room.

In all fairness, I didn't take a public speaking course until I was in college.***

However, I did participate in stage acting for plays in high school.

If you interviewed students from the nursing, engineering, business or other schools it would be a different story. Generally well brought up and well spoken. Many of the football athletes came from challenging situations where they were not trained or exposed to this type of situation. Hopefully they will learn and grow from the situation which will benefit them as the move forward

Kids are getting dumber. However, it’s not all on the educators. Kids are shoved in front of an iPad 24/7 instead of playing with other kids and communicating with parents. It’s getting worse and worse as the years go by. I’m a school librarian and what kids use to be able to do in 2nd grade (my lessons) has now become a 4/5th grade lesson. It’s really sad.

I think with maturity, comes comfort in front of the cameras. If you look at some past players' interviews in college, vs. their interviews as NFL players, it's worlds different.
With that said, I think Clemson's players have always carried themselves pretty well on camera compared to other schools.

I don't recall a public speaking class in HS. However, every year our english class had a speech unit. Also, most history/social studies classes required at least one oral presentation, and even some of the science classes.
I recall memorizing the Preamble to the Constitution and the Gettysburg Address. Our son had a few oral presentations but not many, and zero memorizing.
Clemson English 101 & 102 were hard for me, but they proved to be invaluable. The Theme Penalty Sheet was my bane. Sheesh.

Sports Illustrated did an article in the late 70's about interviews with athletes. One was credited with something like 23 "You know" and 2 "You know, you know" in a 3 minute interview. A boxer said, "He hit me so hard I walked around in a transom!" And, football player said he went on a Tuna fish diet to loose weight in training camp, but all it got him was in the hospital. The doctor told him his electric lights were low.
