No. 15 Clemson Welcomes No. 8 Florida for Saturday Matinee
CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 15/15 Clemson Tigers (6-3, 2-2 ACC) are set to begin a five-game home stretch by first welcoming the No. 9/8 Florida Gators (6-2) on Thursday, March 20th at the Clemson Lacrosse Complex for a noon showdown.
Previous to the past three games, the Tigers were on the longest winning streak in program history, highlighted by wins over then-No. 11/11 Notre Dame, 12-11, and then-No. 5/6 Syracuse, 9-8. Three of Clemson’s victories in the six-game stretch had the Tigers scoring at least 20 goals and winning the draw contest in five of six of those, including 13 and 16 draw margins against Syracuse and Queens.
On offense, Clemson is led by a four-headed attack from attackers Lindsey Marshall and Lexi Edmonds and Tewaaraton Watch List members Kayla MacLeod and Natalie Shurtleff. MacLeod and Marshall have set the pace entering the midpoint of the season with 24 and 23 goals, respectively, with Edmonds and Shurtleff rounding out the offensive assault with 21 and 18 goals, respectively. Marshall and Edmonds are the team leaders in points, with 26 total points on the season. Brooke Goldstein, a freshman from Florida, has nearly tripled the next closest Tiger with 16 assists and has added four goals for 20 points. Sophomore Regan Byrne and senior Katie Castiello round out the Tigers attack with 12 and 17 points, respectively.
Defensively, Summer Agostino, a member of the Tewaaraton Watch List and last week’s Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) National Defensive Player of the Week and ACC Defensive Player of the Week, has led the way. Agostino has been a menace for opposing offenses, causing 23 turnovers and picking up 25 ground balls. Bridget Babcock, Blair Byrne, Marshall and Shurtleff have all picked up double digit ground balls while B. Byrne, Babcock and Paris Masaracchia have each caused at least eight turnovers.
The draw unit, led by Kira Balis, Maggie Jordan and Shurtleff has established itself as a dominant part of Clemson’s program. Balis has the recorded the most and the second-most draw controls in a single game with 20 and 18 against Queens and Stetson, respectively, for a total of 84 on the year, the second-most in a single season in Clemson history. Jordan, Shurtleff and Babcock have each won double digit draws to help Clemson win 152 out of 244 draw controls, good for 62.3% draw win rate.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The Gators are entering Thursday showdown on a three-game winning streak including ranked wins over Loyola Maryland and Navy. Clark Hamilton and Gianna Monaco lead the Gators as the team’s two 20+ goal scorers while Frannie Hahn, Jordan Basso, Kaitlyn Davies and Gabbi Koury round out Florida’s double-digit points recorders. Ashley Dyer, Josie Hahn, Theresa Bragg and Basso all have picked up double digit ground balls with Bragg leading the Gators by causing 14 turnovers. In the draw circle, Cali Bishop and Riley Zusi each have won at least 20 draws and, in the cage, Elyse Finnelle and Georgia Hoey have split time as the Gators’ goalie. Amanda O’Leary leads the Florida lacrosse program with Regy Thorpe as the associate head coach and Haley Hicklen and Nicole Levy serving as assistant coaches.
