It's been fun, but statistically, we are an aberration by comparison to most college programs. The vast majority of universities overpay coaches to come in and run mediocre programs with the hope they will win the lottery.

We've actually been on the opposite side of this deal for a lot of years too. We paid a lot of average coaches a ridiculous amount of money over the years, looking at you Coach Bowden, Coach West, and Coach Hatfield. The first three years of Coach Swinney also wasn't great.

So is one good run every 30 years worth all the money? Now it is tempting to say yes, but I would suggest to you that Swinney had the good fortune to come along at the exact time that college football reached it's heights in popularity, as reflected in lucrative tv contracts with ESPN.

Without tv money, there is no way most of this article's supporting evidence is even possible.

I actually hated the article.

It portrays Clemson as a backwoods town that was struggling, and Clemson University as a “safety school,” both of whom were energized and invigorated by a football coach. That is ridiculous.

Don’t get me wrong, Dabo is great, and has done a lot for our football program. That certainly has some carryover to our university and town as a whole. But the author is a moron. Clemson’s academic standing has been rising over the last 20 years, and is only a “safety school” for a very very small minority of applicants. It is well respected, and was long before Dabo arrived. Applications were at record numbers before Dabo arrived as well, although I’m sure our football success has resulted in additional interest in our school.

The city of Clemson was already changing prior to Dabo, with many new developments in and around town. This included high end restaurants and condos.

I know, I hate this kind of revisionist BS. Dabo would be the first to tell you a lot of people had a hand in it. He’d probably be embarrassed by the hero worship.
