I agree in that Biden is not someone I'm impressed with. But these problems did not happen overnight. A lot of what we are experiencing is based out of COVID, especially the economy. Trump is not responsible for that and neither is Biden.

Unemployment is still low. Jobs are plentiful. I do think we will have a recession, but its all a direct product of the pandemic. Stimulus checks are not the reason for inflation. We have several corporations that avoided taxes and we had PPP checks under Trump. I was fine with that b/c it is what was needed at the time.

How anyone could begin to defend Joe Biden or what this administration has done in less than 3 years is beyond me. I understand Trump has his fault and also that Fox is extremely biased. So let’s take Trump out of the equation. Be honest. Do you think Joe Biden is a better president than Ron Desantis would be? Seriously. If you look at Trumps time in office, aside from his temperament, things were going well. Houses were 30% cheaper, interest rates were lower, wages were increasing, lowest poverty levels in over 60 years and unemployment levels for minorities in history. Desantis is waaay more even temepered than Trump and has proven he can govern a state wonderfully. If you would vote for Biden over Desantis you are truly partisan and biased. I’m independent. Both sides suck. Right now democrats are in office and seem to suck more. Biden isn’t there mentally and arguing against that fact just shows your blind faith to a political party. Or stubbornness.

And the current price of gas would push above the $4 top line of your chart, and give everyone the real info they need. Very telling that you do not show current prices on your chart, which are all time highs compared to inflation and the real price (currently $4.58 a gallon per AAA). On your chart, that would put the current price about half an inch over the title of the graph...Thus illustrating the exact opposite of your point of gas prices "never changing much". Per your graph, the inflation adjusted gas price at the end of 2021 would have been about $3.10...it is now $4.58...much higher than the inflation adjusted amount.

But then, if you greatly increase the inflation rate, then you can raise the price of gas and make it look like it has not been raised at all!!! Maybe the American people will believe that!

Using the calculator that you put the link to...The price of a gallon of gas 1990 was $1.15...That calculated out to the cost of one gallon of gas today per inflation would be about $2.54 per gallon!!! But the actual cost of a gallon today is $4.589 a gallon per the AAA! That is almost twice the inflation adjusted rate!!!! Kind of blows out your original post! See how you can manipulate the numbers so that you can dupe people to believe what you want to make them believe?

And it looks like your graph starts in 1978...when the average price per gallon was $0.63. When that number is passed through your calculator, then gas should be $2.79 a gallon right now!!! You are quickly showing the fallacy of your own post!

some crazy inflation numbers in just about everything. Of course we are, I just found it interesting that gas prices "on average, adjusted for inflation" have been much more stable than I would've thought. Seems to me they have bounced up and down quite a bit, and I'm old enough to remember the 1973 shortage. I sat in line almost 2 hours, about 100 yards long, just to get to the pump and see an 8 gallon limit sign. Never forget my buddy saying - dayum, you just idled out a quarter tank to buy a half tank. LOL. Which was probably true... it was summer and hot and we needed the A/C. And that Nova got about 12 MPG.

Anyway, I just thought it was interesting and put things in perspective. Paying the equivalent $10 for a gallon of milk would really blow people's minds... especially if there's a 5% chance of snow...

It doesn't matter where you get your news from or what a inflation chart tells you. Here's the facts.

1. Higher gas prices could of been avoided. The Biden administration made it very difficult for oil companies to borrow money. They put up so much red tape that it delayed drilling for years. They closed federal lands to drilling. The Keystone pipeline was shutdown. TRUTH. We were energy independent when he took office. He did most of this in his first week of office. WHY?
He sold his soul to the wacko environmental extremist.

2. A big part of the supply chain issues are the California port problems. Biden put a man in charge of transportation because he is gay ,not for his ability to get things done.
The issues are because of the trucking unions and the red tape they are forced to deal with. It's the liberal way.

3. The worst part of Covid was over and the Biden administration was still on shutdown mode. Still enforcing mask mandates and printing money.

4. We are experiencing crime like never before. The vast majority of crimes are committed by Democrats. They are the party of defund the police. They are the party of BLM and Antifia.

trends or price of gasoline in May 2022. For example follow the blue line all the way to the right and it shows gas a little over $3.00 a gallon - indicating the current price where actual cost and inflation adjustment meet (i.e. we don't have adjust today's dollar for inflation).

Obviously the graph is "wrong" for today as we haven't seen gas prices that low since Biden came to office. The average cost of gas today is $4.43 a gallon which would put that blue line so far above the top of that horizontal $4.00 mark it won't even register on the chart. Furthermore it would spike that red inflation line straight up like a rocket going into space if the chart were to accurately reflect today's inflation rate.

So yes - I call a BS on the graphic... Bottom line is that inflation is occurring at a pace most of us have not seen before and if the Government continues running the money printing presses in overdrive we are headed towards hyperinflation.

good poster and reasonable guy. I have a good memory and after 23 years on TigerNet... yeah, I pretty much have everybody pegged. And I'm not even going to get into all the political crap above. It was not my intention to start all that, but I should've known better. That's why I mostly hang out in the Lounge unless I have a specific comment about sports. The Lounge is self-policing... you bring any politics in and you'll usually get ripped a new one. LOL

Below is the link that produced the graph. As you can see, it stops at 2018... I didn't "cut it off" or "edit it" to avoid the crazy spikes we're seeing now. Of course we're seeing higher gas prices than ever before. Duh. The whole thing started when I mentioned to my GF that I heard or read somewhere that the price of a gallon of gas & milk have usually been pretty much aligned. So I looked up the price of milk, adjusted for inflation:

https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/heres-the-price-of-milk-the-year-you-were-born/

Then I looked up the price of gas, adjusted for inflation:

https://www.usinflationcalculator.com/gasoline-prices-adjusted-for-inflation/

I just found it interesting, that's all. We all tend to remember the "good old days" when everything was cheap. But it's usually not true, when adjusted for inflation. The first house I grew up in only cost my mom $11,500... but that was 1955, and that's about $125K in today's dollars. A small 1050 sqft house with 2 BRs and 1 bath in the Welcome community of Greenville. That's probably about what it would cost you today...

Anyway, my original post had no political agenda. I don't give a crap about Trump or Biden or any of those morons.

never meant to imply you were trying to manipulate things to any degree or pull one over on us. I was purely focused on the current price and where we are sitting at inflation - didn't mean to come across as a d*ck...

Until we had this meteoric rise in inflation over the past year the graph is basically correct - for many years we have paid roughly the same in inflationary adjusted dollars for a gallon of gas. Since 2021, however, when inflation started outpacing historic norms that old gallon of gas cost is getting left behind and setting a new high for current out of pocket energy costs.

In my opinion there is plenty of blame to go around when it comes to inflation. Years of the Fed's QE policies combined with both political parties throwing money around like dunk sailors buying booze at an all night shore party have put us in a bad way. It just so happens that we are also in a period of bad US energy policy that is making inflation even worse since everything in our society depends on energy.

It really isn't controversial to say that the Biden regimes energy policies are designed to discourage fossil fuel production. Its been their stated goal for quite some time and during the run up to the 2020 election they weren't shy about saying so. What is irritating is that when their lower production energy policies produce the predictable outcome (higher fuel costs) they play politics by demonizing the energy sector in order to claim the rising prices "aren't our fault". Just watch some of Jennifer Granholm's testimony to Congress yesterday and you will get a real clear picture of how the folks forming/running US energy policy are clueless.

They stopped the pipeline, won't give companies license to drill in a lot of places because the feel it is harming the planet. NEWS ALERT, trucking gas into this country is not helping with the emission trucks put out. Brining into the ports to be trucked. Not attacking the trucking industry just stating facts. HOW many of YOU can afford to buy an electric car??? The majority of people in America cannot afford one, the sticker price is way up there, by the time U add finance charges, insurances U won't be able to do anything but live in it, no home, food clothing for your children, no way to help send your children to college. Question, when they excuse student loans how does that work? Does it mean one time or from now on? Nothing is clear!! Think about the price of gas when you vote, price of food, clothing. Everything else is going up, also how much more is your taxes now, federal??? Young people think about your future do U want socialism?
