Just did a quick comparison b/t 2020 & 2021 offense

Between the two units, we have TWO out of 11 who are starting the same position last year that they're starting this year (for the BC game) - Will Putnam at RG and EJ Williams at WR (who is currently listed as a co-starter with Ladson). TWO out of ELEVEN. We have one OL who started last year (Bockhorst) but he started at LG and this year he's at center. Just a bit of a difference there.

So what's changed since last year? NINE new players on offense, a new RB coach, and an OC in his 2nd full year as a solo OC and play-caller. Of the starters for the BC game, only one (Bockhorst) is a senior. Six are juniors and 4 are sophomores (including our QB, our RB and two OL). Of those who are 2nd on the depth chart for BC, 4 are freshmen (2 on the OL, one at RB and one at WR). We only have ONE senior on the 2nd team (Galloway at TE). This is a YOUNG team.

Not making excuses. Just pointing out that this is not even close to the same offensive unit as last year. It's lacking in cohesion, experience, and potentially leadership.

a complete reset of offensive productivity from the prior "successful" year. These teams also have had a fairly consistent recruiting history over the timespan we're looking at.

scoring offense:
FSU: 2013-1st @ 52.9, 2014-30th @ 33.5ppg
OSU: 2014-4th @ 45ppg, 2015 20th @ 35.7ppg
Clemson: 2016-17th @ 38ppg, 2017-40th @ 31.2ppg
LSU: 2019-1st @ 47.2ppg, 2020-37th @ 32ppg
Clemson: 2020-4th @ 43.4ppg, 2021-119th @ 12.7ppg

CONSIDERING OUR TALENT LEVEL/RECRUITING the last 4 years a "fair drop" after losing a lot of production is about 10-15ppg and 25 spots.........................not 33ppg and 115 spots.

You are way too smart for this forum! Good luck getting these folks to even remotely consider your take on the offense.

Just throwing it out there for whatever it's worth

to whomever reads it.

There are a million variables that play into how any one team plays in any one game, much less 4 games with opponents ranging from FCS to a very likely CFP team.

I'm not trying to say this is the only reason we're where we are. Just was curious for myself how young our team was and threw it out here for whatever people want to make of it.

It also doesn't help from a leadership standpoint that were missing guys like ETN, Lawrence, Powell, Rogers, etc. Yes, many of these guys have been in on meaningful snaps in the past but it's still different when you're now "the guy". I recently watched an interview with Chez Mellusi and he made a comment that his body was in better shape now because at CU he knew he's get some carries but not alot so he wasn't as disciplined with his diet and workouts. This is normally true of most non-starters and RS players.

Not making excuses, they're just not clicking right now.

Young as far as starters but not in terms of playing time . Many of the players have had a ton of playing time last year and for some even more the year before .

The running backs...with Lyn -J gone the only others with a lot of experience are Rencher and Dukes but we saw a Freshman like Shipley had the potential early on,,,In my opinion CJ ran Lyn-J off .

Everyone on the O-line with the exception of Tate has two or more seasons in the program .

All of the Tight Ends have at least two seasons in the program .

Ladson,Ross and Ngata have 3 seasons in the program .Williams has two seasons in the program and in my opinion is dang good WR .

So saying this is a young team isn't true.

Tony E has been part of the play calling for several years...to give him a pass for doing it solo now is BS. Dabo thought he could do it...alas so far he has shown he can't .

You've got some good points

but we've very successfully dealt with turnover and young teams for a decade.

The question is what went wrong this time, after being so good at it for so long?

To be the elite program Clemson fans think it is (and have been since 2015), a drop-off like this is not easy to watch. Only Alabama has shown it can plug in new players every year and hang around the top-5 in the rankings.
You are correct about all the new starters. This was never brought up as a concern over the summer, so no one was prepared for what's happened so far. It was hard to watch the NC State receivers stopping 6 to 8-yards into the zones and taking quick, wide open throws when they needed 1st down yards. Why that is not part of the Tiger offense is baffling.
Take your medicine this year and expect big things next season.

ROSTER MANAGEMENT.

You are seeing a reversion to the mean. Good thing, IMO, slight adjustments in the future should help us-but this year is what it is....its baked in. Going heavy into portal isn't the answer IMO...gotta get vast majority of talent from HS. Adding 2-3 a year from portal (as Bama does) is now necessary due to one-way street out of Clemson that the portal has created. But gotta add more "quality" numbers. No reason for OL to be this mediocre/lacking quality depth for this long at a place like CLEM. A few staff shakeups may be in order too.... Dabo has shown in the past he will adjust (Napier, several DCs, etc...).

Some good points. On the line, three of them started last

year, and yes two were different positions. The WRs are Ross, Ngata, Ladsen, and Williams. LOTS of experience. TE: not even going there. RB and QB are new since Lynn-J managed to whatever himself out of the picture. I think this team is missing a leader on offense. Nobody is picking the group up and pulling them in the right direction. Might have seen the start of some of that with Ross and DJ Saturday. Maybe. But with the lack of player leaders, Tony needs to bring them along with the play calls. That's not happening either. Hopefully some development in both player and scheme can take place and we will make some progress. Sure hoping so! Go Tigers!
