make it through the entire national anthem without kneeling after yesterday's gold medal men's basketball match.
The struggle was real, though. Our intrepid band of brothers, whose combined NBA contract value is in the $1.7B range, was pushed to the brink on several occasions as indicated by their razor-thin 20-point average margin of victory.
Never in the field of basketball conflict was so much owed by so many to so few millionaires.

Steve Kerr’s quote had nothing to do with how much money they make. It was about the expectations the players placed upon themselves and by past teams that came before them to settle for nothing but Gold. You picked the wrong fight to make an erroneous argument.

infer that Kerr was not only talking about their expectations, but our expectations, and that our expectations are shaped in no small part by the fact that these gentlemen are paid many hundreds of millions of dollars to win NBA titles -- so winning an Olympic title is or should be foregone conclusion.

It occurred to me during the medal ceremony that the men being celebrated make more money than 99.999% of their countrymen to win basketball games.
And I was struck by the subtle irony of the moment. I was not angry, I was amused.
Then I remembered the summer of protests, when some of those same millionaires kneeled during the national anthem.
I don't despise their right to do so, I was just glad they didn't do it this go round.

After all, some who were on the gold medal podium have been hell-bent on finding negatives with the United States for a while now, and have been expressing their thoughts on the matter.
I am glad that, at least for a moment, they chose not to air their grievances with those negatives, and instead chose to embrace that which makes us all grateful to be American, not the least of which is living within an economic model that has made some of us so fabulously wealthy.
